I was hiding around some trees from a paladin in Land of Rhun. My sanity was full, my health was full, I didn't quaff anything weird or read any weird scrolls. I couldn't see any monsters cause I was hiding behind the trees; I used my macro: \e\e\e)R&\r\e ... It's always worked before, but this time I clicked it (I didn't hold it down or anything) and the game immediatly shut off. I turned it back on and when I selected my character, it showed up that he had died. I also tried to upload my character dump on the angband dump site to see how I died, and it said: reading chardump, please wait... error!! is this really character dump? Btw, is there any possible way I can get my character back? =( I don't want to have to restart all over again, that's the furthest I've gotten in the game. I'm not gonna mess around with the save file, so if anyone wants to see a copy of it just tell me: LourveStruck@hotmail.com Thx.

...

Ffs, it happened again -_- About 90% hp, maybe 1 or 2 easy monsters around me, Level 50 in Moria, no traps, I use my macro [ \e\e\e)R&\r\e ] .. Insta death (i've used it like hundreds of times, this and up there were the only times it caused any problems). PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE this is so not fair, what can I do to get my character back? I don't care if I have to do some sort of cheating because it's seriously not fair that I died. It's obviously a bug because 1) It doesn't tell me how I die, it just shows my char healing up killer fast and then the game crashes, when I come back it shows him dead. and 2) When I try and upload the character to the angband ladder, it says theres an error reading the char dump.. Any suggestions, please email me at LourveStruck@hotmail.com .. Thx =(

tobiasparker: I do not know why you have an error message, but my guess is you have your disturbance settings incorrectly set, so that when you use your macro to rest until healed. A rabbit or jackal or something just keeps hitting you until you die...just a guess. Also, version information will help.

I admit I did mess around with my disturbance settings, and I'm using v. 2.3.3

Settings:

And btw thx soo much btw, I really appreciate it.

NeilStevens: I've never seen or heard of this happening before. You sure you aren't having hardware problems causing random crashes? Resting on a map with lots of monsters can be CPU-intensive.

Well, I don't know much about hardware but I was told by friends and family that I've got next to the best out there all-around for a computer. I'm reading:

Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz 3.01 GHz 1.00 GB of RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT

Also, I did change some of the settings:

Center the view on the player (very slow) - yes Avoid extra shimmering (fast) - no Avoid processing special colors (fast) - no

Basically good quality settings are up. I usually do this with other games I play though: Oblivion with top graphics settings, FEAR with next to top settings, Doom 3 top settings, Quake 4 top settings ... I never got any lag with any of those games, at least none that I noticed or remembered.

Also, I don't know if this relates at all, but I have never been able to get the windows to work: Mirror window, recall window, choice window, etc.

TobiasParker: Is something using a breath attack on you? that would explain it, looking at your disturbance setting i would say an invisible monster (or one out of your Line of Sight) moves into your line of sight, breathes something nasty on you like Nexus or Water, and then you die without getting any messages since it didnt disturb you when it moved into your line of sight, only if it moves when already in your line of sight. But that is a gameplay observation not a technical one. Try changing your settings and using wizard mode, or gameplay to test it.

k, well also I'm an extreme n00b so I dunno if this means anything, but I remember my Infravision was at 150ft, and I had resistance to pretty much everything (except Nether).. But even then, what should I do to avoid this? Like what settings should I fix up? I was just messing around with the settings so I wouldn't get so many messages but still be able to play the game safely, and also for best graphics. Also, how can I get the windows to work? Btw, thx guys I really appreciate the help.

Derakon: If it were a monster breathing on him, he would have gotten a tombstone screen with cause of death. The crashing program with corrupted savefile is very odd. Perhaps you could upload the file somewhere and link it here so people can take a look at it. For the time being, though, I'd recommend just not using that macro; why not just rest the normal way?

Incidentally, your hardware is total overkill for ToME. The options that are marked as "slow" in the options screen might cause minor lag for someone using a Pentium II or the like. I'd be very surprised if ToME ever puts you over 5% of CPU.

What's up with the ')' in your macro? Elcugo.
