The Epic of Herja Valkyrie
An Introduction to the Epic of Herja by AgnostAngel (the player)
Please note... I've never experienced angband(the dungeon) before, and just barely Mordor. I've little idea of what's in store for me, and its been the tips of the community that have guided me as far as I've gotten.
The idea for Herja began in a complex way. The first idea was for an Entish Bard that was going to be an "Ents Ent." Boulder-throwing and barehanded all the way, then music and symbiosis. It made perfect sense for moss to grow on trees.
Alas... I didn't like the upkeepless endless summoning of symbiosis. It felt like cheating. I liked the bard aspect though, though I was iffy on barehanded as well.
So I thought of a dwarvish bard. I figured I'd use the (admittedly low) axe modifier to avoid non-specialized weaponmastery combat, would worship Tulkas for wave of power (a ranged "melee" attack) and would go with mimicry. Wait. Dwarvish Bard. Axes and song... SKALD!
Raising the Axe skill up to 25 showed to be too much of an investment in points though, and so I scrapped the idea. But the Norse bug had hit me, and it bit hard. I wanted... a Valkyrie.
So I combined the ideas of Valkyrie and Skald. Thunderlord was an easy choice as its both a good candidate for a bard, and can be very easily imagined as a Valkyrie with the flight from eagle instead of winged horse as the art depicts (or as a little research suggested, they were actually riding wolves, as they were imagined from the crows and wolves that hung around the battlefields and fed off the dead for a higher purpose. Or... well... theres not a lot of consensus on what they actually rode. So let's just pretend it was an Eagle of Manwe, 'k?)

Playing Strategy
To create the truest Norse Myth character possible. This means we'll be choosing Summoning, as the Valkyrie's summon forth the slain into the halls of Valhalla for battle, mimicry as the Norse Myths are fraught with shapeshifting, music as their musical heritage in the skald is legendary, and weaponmastery/combat as we all know, where stands a viking without his weapon and armor?
It is indeed entirely possible to nearly max all of these skills without a single fumblefingers quest at all. I'm expecting about 20 fumblefingers quests though, so we'll see what he gives us. I will not be taking mindcraft, however for my own reasons. Divination is a definite choice though, as well as Conveyance. And who knows, maybe something else.
I also have a desire to try out trapping, but I don't know if this is the time or place for that. I guess we'll see?
Summoning is NOT to be relied upon. I've been trying to think of some limit to put on myself and among them I've thought up "only monsters from legends" and "true totems only at a certain point in the game." I'm still not sure what I'll be doing though. I'm just definitely not going to use summoning unless I need it.
I can't remember at the moment what magic device is gonna be raised to. 25 or 35, or maybe zero if I can get a +5 harp (hah!) and conveyance high enough.
Chatter Rules
Simply... be appropiate. Criticism is welcome, so are spoilers, subtle hints are infuriating yet entertaining, and whatever else that as long as it applies to ToME and/or Herja is more than welcome. Oh yes, chatter in the chatter sections of course, and if it applies to a certain section of the story instead of to the tale in whole, put it in the chatter section as close to immediately below that story section as possible.
No highlighting required, though leaving a name is appreciated.
And so, the Epic of Herja Valkyrie began...
Chapter One: Choosing the Slain
I began as I may, in search of instrument worthy of Manwe's call. An instrument of wyrmskin slain, or dragon scale tamed, so it all began. Alas, my search was for in naught, yet there were hope still! A wand of strike, to kill me a wyrm so as maybe to fashion a trophy in His name worthy of battle!
Alas, in its test of prowess twas enough to kill dragon, two indeed! And my own abilities of combat improved more than dozenfold in facing the fell beasts. But, it destroyed the corpses in end. Though, my thunder that I could call was now strong enough to kill the wyrmkin many headed hydra that lurked south of Bree in their stinking swamp. So, I journeyed there.
Twas toilsome work. The lizard's shall miss their many kings though, and the many tongues lolled out of the serpentine beasts heads that lay by my side as I write this here. I amassed a decent treasure off of them, several magical rings and gold piles, though small, brought a smile to my face.
There was a close call though! A wyrm-kin bit deep into my clothed chest. Alas, I had not armor yet to prevent this, nor magiks to stop the bleeding after the foul thing fell.
And I bled. And I bled.
Then alas, I survived, at naught but an fifth of my health of two hundreds and some! So I ate my first meal of this time on middle earth, and continued at my work. To choose a worthy wyrmkin (mayhap a king of lizard be suitable?) to fashion a totem so as Manwe may choose the slain thing as a servant of mine.
And yet now as I write, I've my and Manwe's prize. Now I have been blessed with a totem of a lizard king, and indeed it is suitable for mine devices.
Later that day, I watched as my chosen slain swarmed another kind of fell beast, dragon scale and poison lisped off its dreadful form. But it fell as the kings scurried beneath its girth, and all was dead save me. And alas, I did select the fell green dragon as a chosen slain to serve Manwe's higher cause.
Using this chosen slain, I felt confident in my ability to topple Oddysseus's fearsome rival, a Cyclopse. After felling several of the more fearsome of their warriors by the poison stench of the dragonwyrm's I found one worthy of forging totem to Manwe and myself. So I did.
As I did this, night fell, and I returned to Bree. I slept in an inn and scouted the town for a loft so my Eagle may nest in peace without scaring the patrons. I found it in a house of destitutes, which I gladly slew for the benefit of all. Well, save themselves, of course.
Chatter for Chapter One: Choosing the Slain
- I wasn't quite sure how to start. I knew my most powerful weapon would be summoning, but I was loathe to raise it with only a +.4 modifier. I did raise it to 3.2 though, and that proved to be enough. On another note, this first part is actually a merging of two different Herja's. The first died fighting the first cyclopse using Storm Giant totems, but the second had a start so similar that when I wrote a "she awoke, bare a naked save for the blessings Manwe lay beside her" I realized, I was gonna be reading the exact same thing over again. So, I merged the two, but couldn't bear to leave out the "wounded and I bled and I bled" part that was from the first Herja as a show of mortality. So I left it in, and I think it adds flavor. Also, I apologize for there not being a character dump for this chapter, I wanted to make sure I got to a sufficient point in the story to be worth your reading time to make a character dump. Or, I forgot. You pick :D.
Chapter Two: The Tests of Manwe, the Barrow-Downs
Calling my eagle to me in the morning, I journeyed off confident to handle the quests that lay ahead of me. I had been told Manwe tests her subjects in the depths of these dark dungeons, and as her most faithful I suspect there may well be a test at every depth of these dungeons indeed. Many of these quests was indeed ahead of me, in what they call the Barrow-Downs.
I was to find a sword so that a new follower of Manwe could better fight the forces of Melkor. In reward, he would better teach me a skill, though what I would be rewarded with depended on how my faith in Manwe was shown as I journeyed upon this quest. Ineed, my faith must have been well shown as I was rewarded with a better understanding of the ways of choosing and summoning the slain!
The next of such quests was to save another advocate lost in these depths from poisonous, sentient coins. I saw these coins piled about a pit of lava, which was a true annoyance as my eagle hadn't the room to flap a wing. I scarred a muscle in the battle amidst the shifting rocks in that lava, and lost some strength, but all the coins were scattered about till finally she was released. She gave me the armour 'Hithlomir' so that my travails should better go unheard.
The next level was fraught with an advocate caught by moaning spirits. Alas, I could not touch them for some fell spell that induced cowardice, and my lizard king couldn't hurt them either. So I retreated to town, and searched for a ring to prevent their fould magik.
Gondolin featured no such ring, nor Bree, so I rested the night after the travels to search those two towns and decided on hunting dragon's for the ring in the morn. Only a few were slain in my efforts to find one, as Manwe saw fit to reward me quickly, and I was ready to fight the fell spirits this time.
Whence from where I came, there was a freed woman. And a few less spirits moaning about, after some hunting for a few that teleported away. I queaffed the restore dextrous potion I had saved from town after noticing their draining effects the last time, and I was rewarded not only with adroitness but a long sword of the thunderlords from the advocate to continue on my way, which I quickly wielded.
Another advocate imprisoned here. This time, disenchanter molds had been grown around her cell, which I conjured thunder to shrivel in the glaring light. While there I felt the fingers of some... unimaginable... creature lift gold from my pocket as it whispered "he has but four fingers on his black hand" to me. I could not see it though, so I continued on. I was rewarded with a small sword of slay dragon.
The next level, another blessed sword was to be returned to a male advocate by hunting down baby multi-hued wyrmkin. I was taught a deeper understanding of magic.
Alas, another imprisoned priest of manwe, a lady, with a horde of mongbats arresting her. I summoned a chosen slain for them to gather round and swatted them off him like flies though I did feel the sting of their poison as a flight of them assailed me in the beginning.
And again, a holy sword to be returned to the faithful. A foul of Swordsman had stole it, and once returned I was taught Conveyance.
And as the last in the Barrow-Downs, I was taught weaponmastery by an intrepid soul who had lost his sword to an invisible menace, a horde of lurker's I think they are called. I could not see them, but certainly my Cyclopse's one eye were sharper than my two!
When I returned to Bree, there were an interesting pendant of snakes tongue hardened by magiks for sale by their more unscrupulous merchants. I did purchase it with the gold from all the rewards I had received, and it rose my dextrousness by a fourth to twenty and a three! This left but one thing to fear. I feared my inability to see the unseen, so I began my search for a ring to aid me in my efforts. I slept the night though, 'fore my next journey began.
Chatter for Chapter Two: The Tests of Manwe, the Barrow-Downs
- Oh my... I just remembered I get Conveyance from Manwe... Well... Umm. Hmm. Well. I think I prefer actual conveyance since I can raise it faster and at less skill points than with prayer? Oh, and I'm quite lost as to where to go next. Dungeon towns aren't a big deal to me right now, and all I'm lacking that's of immediate importance is see invisible, which I'll quickly fix by either scumming mature dragon's for rings (though by now I forgot where that break in the mountain chain was...), or checking Gondolin and Bree a couple of times. Guess I'll check Lord Dimwit's guide since I'll probably not get an immediate response (I'm looking at continuing on in about... oh... right after I finish editing this?)
- Looks like it'll be the Orc-Caves, then Mirkwood to get a + to mimicry modifier, then Sandworm Lair as soon as that happens.

Chapter 3: 'Fore and Aft the Orc Caverns
When I awoke, I spent a day hunting dragons, and checking Gondolin and Bree for a ring of seeing the unseen. Alas, that day has fled now, and I am left in darkness with naught but a few treasures of no note. I awake the next morning and begin the search anew, after checking Gondolin again.
This day was a lucky day. As I speak, the a greater magic paper wrote itself the full details of the 'Ring of Marth' [+10](+1). It must be worthy of a king, because it grants wisdom and eloquent speech, as well as resistance to corrosives, noises, cold, prevents blinded eyes, makes you less hungry, and most importantly... lets you see the unseen. I was indeed ready for the orcish caverns.
After a good nap beneath the stars.
When I awoke, I checked the merchant of less... reputable tastes and he had a Drum of Power (+2) for sale... at a discount!. It would also let me see the unseen, as well as letting me sing several useful tunes to aid me in my battles. I couldn't resist... I had to have it. Took a third of my treasures I had ammassed, but I believe its magiks will indeed be worth it.
And then, I left for the foul caves I had been planning to cleanse since I left the 'Down's.
I sit here at the exit of the caves, stench of orcs upon me, blood tattered and a few trophy's to carry out. The parrying blade of Maedrho's is my weapon now, Thalkettoth my armor, though it doesn't quiet the flaps of my eagles wing, and Cammithrim my gloves so that I may see through the darkness by their light. Also, I found a powerful amulet... very cursed. But I've heard tale of removing curses that reverses them, and I think that may do on this amulet. It is called an Amulet of Doom, and doom indeed. Cannot drop the cursed thing. But I'll spend the next few days reciting the spell from the magic scroll that removes curses till I get it right, and it shall be an Amulet of mine enemies doom!
But, you wish to hear the tale of battles won and lost, no? The blood of orcs flowed, and of Uruk-Hai, and spider's mirkwood and cave. Mongbats touched their fell poison on my skin again, but I was quite prepared this time. Besides that, there was little of note. Well. There was something...
I very nearly died at the hands of Azog, king of Uruk-Hai. It took a potion of speed to double my movement, and the speed granted by my new runed of power artifacts to space myself and a lizard king held him off whilst I quaffed potions of cure wounds. Then, I tore aside my lizard king in seeking vengeance for pain caused, and thrust Maedrhos's parrying blade into that foul creatures flesh. And there I found the wand of Mountain King Thrain. It is small token for the trouble I went through.
Three days of remove cursing chants later...
Finally. Twas a good break from adventuring though, I've reversed the curse with a very very sensitive, precise incantation. I feel stronger, wiser, smarter, more dextrous, hardy and more eloquent. It is indeed a powerful item. Now... Where shall my travels take me?

Chapter Three Chatter
- Bleh. I had to use summoning to beat Azog for the wand. Other than that, I used summoning maybe once every four or so major battles, and twice in large open spaces to help clean house. Furthermore, the whole time I just used lizard king's, which feels alot more legitimate to me as I could easily have gotten a totem of them as I could kill them myself. My big fear is coming true though... she's relying on summoning too much, and she's only sung two song's this whole game. I need to work on this... I know what I have to do. Time to put monster-lore to work, time to companion a few ... what though? Cyclopse's or lizard kings? Hmm. choices. I guess it comes down to what I can actually kill though. Maybe I should hunt the hills without summons to see if I can take down some kind of giant to use.
General Chatter
- How's it look, how's it feel? I'm open for comments and suggestions. Though I am a bit touchy about the writing style... I'm quite fond of using old, broken english. Makes Herja really feel Norse, I'd dare say.
- I'm thinking of doing a reimagining of Herja, as a mimicry music only character. I dunno. I'll think about it.
Opalias
- Very unique character, and the story has been good so far. iLike
