This ChangeLog was begun on 2004-06-28.

Introduction

MayLith: The foundation text of Documentation is the in-game help from ToME 2.2.7.

I began this changelog after having worked on the documentation for several days. I will attempt to play catch-up with what I have already done, but I may miss some things. A concrete diff can be obtained by comparison of the doc files here with the in-game help files from ToME 2.2.7, though you'll get a lot of junk in the diff as a result of differences in formatting.

If you notice errors or inconsistencies, please either correct them and note the change here under specific changes, or note the problem in Documentation/Discussion. Thanks!

Goals

Overall: Make the documentation more helpful, organized, easier to read, and current, while eliminating spoilers.

1. Make the help more...helpful.
   1. Improve readability
      1. Reorganize the tree and/or munge and/or rewrite as needed to clarify existing content.
      2. Correct grammar and spelling; reduce wordiness.
   2. Introduce wiki TOCs, headings and other wiki formatting wherever possible in order to improve readability and browsability. Tables only for tables.
   3. Remove outdated material and update with current information wherever possible.
   4. Add relevant non-spoily examples to clarify information given.
2. Remove spoilers.
   1. Remove game-specific spoilers.
   2. Remove references to Angband and/or other roguelikes.
3. Do all of this while tracking changes, so that the in-game help can more easily be altered to reflect new information here.

Changelog entry format

A good changelog entry contains:

• your name
• name of the page you changed

• what change(s) you made, in detail. This isn't just a random document. The actual ToME documentation is being modified from this page! If you get a huge list of changes, put something like 'major rewrite', but it helps to point out things even then.

• why you changed it (if relevant)

• the @TIME@

MayLith: Removed 'winning the game' from 'exploring the dungeon' section

MassimilianoMarangio: Moved some old, orphaned pages to their correct location.

• "Creating a character" (subheading, not whole section): imported with no changes
• Subheadings of "Creating a character" wiki-ized

  • gender is NOT necessarily fixed throughout the game; changed doc to reflect that

  • primary stats wikiized; "are always have" -> "always have"

  • primary skills wikiized; magic devices -> magic device skill; rename racially intrinsic skills

  • rewrote activations (should these even stay?)

  • experience: major edit (level-> char level, deleted spoilers, other rewording)

  • money: major edit (rewrite/format; removed inventory reference)

MayLith: Doc/Races: Import, almost untouched -- very minor edits for grammar/etc.

MassimilianoMarangio: Documentation/Race modifiers: removed the old "restore life" power of skeletons and zombies.

MayLith: Doc/Classes/Alchemist: Import. Some spelling/punctuation. Tables not included, they don't wikiize well

MayLith: When I say tables/etc not included, I mean: "Starting stat modifiers, starting Skills, innate abilities and starting equipment: Please see the in-game help."

None of these classes below'll have the tables.

• Documentation/Skills/Antimagic: Import, and added detect traps and anti-teleportation effects. (fixed wiki link)
• Documentation/Races/Wood-Elf: Made a NOTE of the wood elf's archery and modifier changes in 2.3.

MayLith:

• Documentation/Abilities: The abilities tree will temporarily go on this page. Reformatting -- deleted a lot of carriage returns, plus many, many extra spaces that look like an attempt at right-justification. Deleted reference to Angband, and a few minor spelling/etc fixes. Removed confusing references to Searching Frequency (Perception) and Searching Ability (Searching), left it as Perception and Searching. 2004-08-11 17:18:24

• Documentation/Abilities: Imported bought abilities from ability.txt; wikiized, a few word changes. Added header to the page explaining difference between the two types of abilities. 2004-08-11 17:46:22

• Documentation: Deleted stub for "Introduction to the ToME abilities system". It's all on the abilities page itself. (And that page is somewhat temporary, so it'll all have to be reworked later anyway.) 2004-08-11 17:52:10

MayLith: Documentation/Race modifiers: Moved paragraph at top of page to formal "introduction" section. Added sentence about not all races supporting all race modifiers.

Also, two unlogged link changes were made (ToME --> Self); see the diff for details. (This does not affect in-game help.) 2004-08-28 17:34:38

  • panic saves (if that still applies??)

  • random quests going away due to permanent levels/always special rooms Added a FAQ of my own.

MayLith: Documentation/List of commands: starting import/basic wikification. Some very basic updates, e.g. "N" (access Abilities screen) is *not* unused!! 2004-09-26 03:15:05

• More import. Does the roguelike keyset have a command to take screenshots? Command.txt doesn't say one way or another. 2004-09-27 18:54:31

• This doc is littered with references to Angband. Changing those to ToME.

• Macro help -- combine this with other macro ref? It seems odd to have it scattered everywhere. 2004-09-27 19:42:06

• For the moment I'm importing the old Macro FAQ, and removing obsolete bits as necessary. I have only removed bits which I know to be obsolete, and I do not know about the actual macros, so much of the section will almost certainly still need change.
• Imported Quick Start tutorial, simple reformatting for wiki, and anchor links. Needs links to other sections.
• Imported Overview, same as quickstart.
• Imported Common macros and Techniques, needed extensive reformatting, and removal of some obsolete docs (sections 4.3 to 4.5 of the old FAQ and a section telling people how to farm monsters. I don't think we should be encouraging people to scum in docs.). Reordered what was left to a slightly more logical form. Will require linking elsewhere in the FAQ and outside (Exploring the Dungeon, IIRC).

• Changed "Introduction to the Gods of ToME" page to "Gods" for the sake of brevity, and updated all the necessary links (hopefully).

• Altered headers to say: Subpages should contain non-spoily information of the type currently contained in the on-line game help. Please put spoiler information in the appropriate place in the SpoilerArchive. Thanks. Instead of the old-style, "please no edits" type headers.

This is an old todo list, and is not necessarily accurate anymore, although most of the things probably still need doing...

• Finish links to macros section.
• Ensure macro section is up to date.
• Go over exploring the dungeon, and rewrite in places.
• Redo class pages and put in tables.
• Links from bought abilities page to classes/races pages.
• Check CVS for changes to help files and adjust wiki if necessary.
