I originally got started in rouge likes by playing nethack on Linux. I also like watching my friends play Dia blow (sp?) in windows and thought it would be nice to be able to get back to a town so you could get food and other fun things like that. I played nethack off and on for a few years never winning, and never really getting close, I just had fun exploring.
I found ToME a little over a year ago (2004) in a comment on a slashdot post. I downloaded and started killing characters pretty quickly but I have slowly gotten the hang of it.
About Me
I am an American who is currently (2005) studying Japan working on my PhD. I hope to finish in a couple of years. Otherwise like many people here I enjoy reading LoTR and wish I had more time fore reading but my research takes up almost all of my time.

Favorite races: Trolls, Rohan Knights, (Most anything other than ultra low hit points or ultra high experience penalties (exception ents).)
Favorite classes: Unbeliever, Sorceror, Sword masters, Paldins, Dark priest (I still have a bunch more to try)
Favorite Gods: Melkor
Wins: 7 (Another that came close)
Best character: Bembard, CL50 Zombie Troll Unbeliever
Favorite finds: 'Ringnil', 'Mormegil' with my unbeliever, Ring of precog
Game habits:
- Clearing most of the early to mid levels. Diving the later levels.
- Depend on melay too much and forget about internal abilities or ranged weapons.
Play with the unicode patches found here. They work with 2.3.2 I don't know what I will do when the don't work anymore.
- Play with 5 game windows (main, inventory, messages, monster recall and visible monster list) All of those I should use more.
- Packrat. I always have trouble selling stuff because I think I might need it sometime.
Stupidest death: Which one? The standard traveling in the wilderness without food/?oSH. Walking into the kazadum house quest without ever doing it before. I was dead in only a few turns. Taking god quests to early. Dead because I did not have see invisible to notify me when I was getting low on hit points. Fighting monsters and not making use of healing potions. **SPOILY** Get a player knocked back down to CL 1 or so trying a Melkor quest. Go and scum shallow water for Hydra to get experience back with the possibility of getting the next god quest at a lower level. Only to die trying to melay Hydra even though I have a pack full of wands of manathurst and good MD skill. **/SPOILY**
