General info

Yachuinth is my first legitimate roguelike winner ever, yay!

Given that it had been suggested to me to play a sorceror, I played one. Due to the fact that I really like playing generally resilient characters, I played a Thunderlord Sorceror, Classical rather than a Hermit, worshipped Tulkas for plusses to CON, and trained my Spirituality skill extensively.

I found the character to be extremely powerful. Thunderlord strength let Yachuinth carry spellbooks, diggers, armor, everything with no speed loss despite Sorceror weakness. Thunderlord hit dice made up for Sorceror frailty. Thunderlord quick-escape powers saved me from many situations where another Sorceror would have lost for lack of mana or by taking too much damage too fast.

To add interest, I set the "always small levels" option, and picked 98 quests.

A Princess in the Barrow-downs gave me a Mage Staff of Power (+10), and from that point on my character was obsessed with spell power. I also, by luck, collected the +6 spell power version of the Wight-king's rag; I acquired the Metal Cap of Celebrimbor (from a princess) as well as three Crowns of the Magi with +3 to spell power, gained Mimicry at 0.500 from FF guys for Arms Mimicry to wield a second Mage Staff of Power, and finally wore the One Ring. At the end of the game my Manathrusts did an average of 2279 damage each.

the Necromancer, the One, Sauron, and Morgoth

These guys are annoying. They cast mana balls.

This is the one place where Sorceror HP loss actually hurt badly. I had to wait almost until level 50 before having enough hitpoints to survive the Necromancer, and I never had enough naturally to survive a mana ball from Sauron. I used my aforementioned Arms Mimicry to allow myself to wield a weapon of Life (+20%) to survive Sauron; neither of them ever cast a mana ball, anyway.

After killing the Necromancer, which was easy by the time I had enough HP for complete safety, I talked with Galadriel and then set out to find the One Ring. I killed Shelob and the Watcher easily, but neither of them coughed it up. Then I chased down Glaurung and Feagwath, who were a bit more dangerous, but neither of them had it either. Then I was stuck because I had killed Ar-Pharazon long ago, with the help of a Steel Helm of Water Breathing; Toris was just too important to wait for.

So I gallivanted down Angband and killed Sauron, after a few misadventures. He dropped the One Ring the first time, and what's more, he dropped the Great Rod Tip of Home Summonning.

Then I recalled out, walked over to Galadriel's pool, and wore the One Ring. This decision was motivated both by Yachuinth's obsession for power, and also by my annoyance that my previous winner characters had been unable to handle the loss of the shops. This character had some trouble dealing with the 1/3 hitpoint loss, since it put him beyond the range of ever being able to survive a mana ball from Morgoth.

The second Sauron fight was easy, although I had to chase him down once after he teleported away; then, I went to find Morgoth. I stair-scummed levels 100 and 101, using my super-powered Detect Monsters to check if he was on each level.

The first fight with Morgoth did not go well, or rather, it went well until Morgoth, Lord of Darkness fired a rocket. I died. ;) Fortunately, the power of the One Ring sustained my life, and the second time, Morgoth was not so lucky.

Below is a character dump of just after Yachuinth collected Morgy's treasure: (he had a score of 18626222, by the way...)

Chatter

ZasVid: Consider using CharacterSheetTemplate next time - it's saving quite a bit of hassle in setting up character pages. Some comments: On fighting Sauron: Tracker spell would've saved you from any inconveniences stemming from his teleportitis. Lucky you indeed that none of the big guys mana balled you. Though rockets are just as nasty for poor low-hp Sorcerors, especially sapped by the One and Ring Resurrection. Anyway, congratulations! :)

ElvishPillager: The template is probably more useful for someone who has umpteen characters to describe. :P Tracker? Nah, I had been setting up antisummoning corridors and such tricks to fight him with, and Tracker would have landed me who knows where. His own penchant for returning and my Thunderlord targetted teleport worked fine for my purposes.

As to "such tricks", here's one:

It gives me a Sauron-turn plus however long it takes him to break the glyphs to manathrust him, and I'm not in his line of sight. This also works:

although you need tricky targetting to hit. Beware, the targetter has bad interface issues that sometimes make this impossible. Here's something I haven't tried:

I call it "Pillardancing for sorcerors", and in theory you should be able to back around indefinitely, manathrusting without ever coming within enemy LoS, provided only that you're a margin faster than your opponent. I do love exploiting the system. >:D
