Roguelike Biography
I started with Angband many, many years ago, back when 2.8.2 was the latest version (so late 1990s?). From there I moved on to ZAngband, and later to Pernband, although Pern didn't run well on my computer at all, and so I didn't play it much. Eventually I tried ToME a couple of years ago, and was hooked.
The only *band I've ever beaten is Steamband. I've gotten close in Angband, ZAngband, and ToME, but never quite made it.
Someday I want to win with an Angband Priest and ZAngband Trump-using Mage. Someday...
ToME
Favorite races: Dunedain, Elves, Ents, Theme's Easterlings
Least favorite races:Death Molds (too annoying, too cheesy), Rohanknights and Thunderlords (feels too Pern, not Tolkien)
Favorite classes: Archers, Sword- and Polearm-Masters, Thaumaturgists
Wins: None in ToME or Theme, yet.
Favorite finds: Anything with lots of resists. Anything wildly out-of-depth. Fancy boots. Joy's Amulet.
Map style: ASCII. I just can't get used to graphics. I even play Dwarf Fortress in ASCII.
Game habits:
- Detection heavy - traps, monsters, items.
- Always keep teleport an option.
- Going in with lots of items, then dumping extra scrolls before recalling if I need the inventory space.
- Meleeing, even when I probably shouldn't.
- Obsessed with clearing the entire level, which is why I now play with Always Small Levels on.
- Usually play Theme
Bad Game Habits:
- See "Stupidest Deaths" below.
- Forgetting basic items, like food or teleport scrolls. My archer almost starved to death due to this.
- Getting in over my head during mid and late game. Overconfidence is deadly in this game.
Stupidest death: Besides accidentally stepping on deep water tiles in the overland travel view? Most of mine are due to not paying attention to HP, or playing with real-life distractions causing carelessness. I've also lost two recent characters to water monsters, one due to a Theme bug, the other in ZAngband - stupid Moira.
Window Layout: I used to just use the main window, but now that I've got a widescreen laptop, I have to fill that space with something! Right now I have messages in the lower-left, and inventory in the lower-right.
Classes I Want to Win With:
- One of the Priest classes, like Ulmo worshipers.
- An Archer
- Demonologist - I did once get one pretty deep. They're fun!
- A Loremaster of some sort; maybe a Symbiant.
Personal Biography
Just finished school, and currently unemployed, leaving too much time for ToME.
I read the Lord of the Rings before the movies came out, and read The Hobbit when I was but a wee little child. I've also read the Silmarillion, and have read a few chapters of the Book of Lost Tales. I also own a Tolkien Bestiary book that's really neat. Eventually I plan to reread the books (I've already reread the Hobbit), and I want to get a better copy of the Silmarillion. I'm also looking for a good Middle Earth atlas.
Notable Characters
Joy, the Wood Elf Archer - Still Alive! And looking pretty good, with all Resists covered, some good equipment, and base +17 speed. Could use Varda's God-book and some more HP, though. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=8050&ok - Died recently, because I got overconfident in Erebor. Killing Ancient Dragons and Great Wyrms one-on-one is one thing, getting jumped by a dozen Black Numenoreans is quite another, and very fatal.
Cyron, the Steam-Mecha Adventurer (Steamband) - my only winner! Boy are Steam-Mecha easy. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=4140
To be listed: my last Angband Priest, killed by carelessness (never play when distracted!), and my last ZAngband mage.
