Feathin the Slime Foxan Sorceror for the Gerband Quest competition
Intro
You were once a foxan like any other, content in your hole. Then a shadow crept over your land, and while you were fast asleep your burrow grew slimy. When you woke up, the slime had worked its way throughout you.
This chap is *tough*. This is around the tenth shot at this character. And I know that he could still die in a flash, though he is wielding a fair bit of power. I'm being really careful (usually) with him, but I have had some very close calls. His incredibly low strength makes it really hard to wear much equipment to fill out resistances and such (carrying his standard kit of 56 pounds as of clev 33 puts him at 140% weight cap). As soon as he gets an intelligence of 25, he'll purchase Undead Form.
So now my weight allowance is more comfortable, and Essence of Speed evens things out anyway. I have Undead Form, though I haven't had to use it yet. That is somewhat surprising, considering how much I've courted death, giving such things as Demilichs and Elder Vampires chances to attack me long-distance. I'm still very mortal, easily killable in one shot, though having the reflection does save me from bolt attacks fortunately.
Meanwhile, I killed Slash since he got mad when he wandered into my noxious cloud. So he put the morgothian curse on me which replicated to my Ring of Barahir and put no blows on my mage staff (OH NO! *wink*) and then he summoned a GWoP as well. I thought about killing the GWoP (I could have, using my higher speed), but decided not to. The morgothian curse also gave me the Black Breath, which I have no means to cure until I manage to find an athelas (no place in town has herbal healing). Fortunately having Recovery allows me to replenish my stats as soon as they are drained.
Thanks to the new version and wandering around a while with the Black Breath waiting for the store to refresh, I'm cured. And I'm happily on my way, carefully slaughtering whatever I choose to. The princess keeps on picking difficult monsters, so I'm rather annoyed with her. Amazingly, I've taken out 14 demilichs, 14 elder vampires, 14 great storm wyrms, and 6 archlichs without having died once. Speed, strategy, and fortune there. Meanwhile, I'm a hop and skip away from level 45. Unfortunately, there's no Maeglin quest to look forward to.
That would be a really nice reward, around now. But hey, I have broken 200 HP! My equipment is really behind, which is annoying considering how many princess quests I've been doing, but she never offers anything interesting. Grr, why can't she just hand me a nice randart mage staff, or a randart armor with +60% hp, or...*subsides into muttering* And I'm seriously hoping to find some Nazgul soon, since my rings are pathetic...wait...they were probably removed. :-/
*stunned shock* Not again! Agh. So I was jumping in and out of one of those 4-room pits killing things, and The Incubus (coalined unique, passes through walls) was hanging around chattering (and getting himself slammed by several Osyluths). I mopped up a bunch of trolls and wolves using Noxious Cloud (while the Incubus was left a safe distance behind thanks to Probability Travel) and then retreated back to the edge of the screen to rest. The Incubus rejoined me there, but as soon as he got there he was inexplicably hit a number of times and died, laying the Morgothian curse on me and summoning a GWoP (which failed to be summoned since I was in the middle of a large section of granite wall). The curse landed itself on my mage staff of power (+11). What I'm assuming here is that the Incubus wandered through my noxious cloud while out of LOS, then returned to me and somehow had the effects applied then, killing him. And isn't he a demon? Greater Demons are usually immune to noxious cloud anyway...though I guess sucubi/incubi are more human-like in form, so maybe they are an exception. At any rate, I'm beginning to hate coalined uniques more than hrus, swans, water hounds, master Qs, and aranea combined. (note that the character log and dump do not reflect this latest development)
Okay, enough for tonight. Going on 1:00 in the morning, and I don't want to stupidly kill this guy. Because there's no reason for him to die. He's invincible! MWAHAHAHAH. Er, right. But, things are going quite nicely. Still have never died.
Here's my basic strategy: Essence of Speed, Regeneration, Stone Skin, Absorb Soul, Probability Travel, and Balrog Form are kept running pretty much all the time. I do most of my movement by Probability Travel, jumping into a room and killing everything, staying by the wall to provide an immediate escape. When I run out of mana, I travel to the edge of the map and rest. Most killing is done with manathrust, but I also use fireflash and electric bolt and noxious cloud a lot. I use genocide liberally, and wraithform when it is useful (moving around in vaults with granite walls). That's basically it, aside from a lot of being very careful. Oh, and I have Spellbinder with healing, fireflash, electric bolt, and banishment, set at 50% (I used to have it at 25%, but it kept firing every time I'd do a genocide or take a lil' bit of damage from anything).
The princess was nice to me a couple, times, as you can see from the quest log. Two quests for Master Quylthulgs. Easy as pie. Just filled their room with trees before going in, then put on the Anchor, cast wraithform, walked through the doors, and manathrust manathrust manathrust. Heh. Of course, she hasn't given me anything useful. After a long time of no fumblefingers, he finally returned several times in a row, and gave me symbiosis two more times. So I've got a .5 mod in that, and I threw all the skillpoints I had left into it. It didn't net me any particularly useful abilities, as the highest I have is minor powers, but it should inspire my symbiant to more frequently take damage. Still, Stealth and/or Spirituality probably would have been better choices.
My equipment is still terrible, but it hasn't really caused any problems. I'm fast enough and hit hard enough and avoid pretty much all damage, and if anything does damage me then it gets my spellbinder in its face. Still, if I was faced with an ancient dragon horde and knew that one of them had a randart ring of intelligence I'd take the lot of them out. Or a randart shield with reflection, so I could ditch my amulet of reflection in favor of Toris Mejistos. Or a staff of wizardry (+4) or better. Eh.
But my main concern now is...how to win? "Find the potion of remove evil curse" tells me a lot. Is there a special level with it? Is it randomly generated below depth 100? Is there a boss monster carrying it? Is it just a really rare potion, that if I was lucky I might have found 70 levels ago? Well, hopefully I'll figure out most of that tomorrow (er, later today). Meanwhile, I get to go to sleep dreaming slimy dreams of foxes grabbing every potion in sight...
So, it turns out that my main concern still should have been how to stay alive. I took out 12 old sorcerors for a princess quest easily enough, luring them out one by one from their room. But then a Great Swamp Wyrm followed them out of the room (I knew he was coming, of course. I'd taken out several of them before). Unfortunately, I had just run out of mana, and while killing the old sorcerors my probability travel had worn off. No prob, I thought, just two steps to safety. One step - *boom*, poison breath, and in death form. Which, nicely, filled my mana back up, so I locked the Great Swamp Wyrm in a stone prison, cast probability travel, and travelled to a giant pit just a screen to the north. It was just a couple cyclops and hill giants, so I was fairly incautious (stupid me) and started fireflashing. One hill giant got a hit on me and activated spellbinder, which killed him and several others, so I backed off a pace so that none would melee me. Killed a bunch more with a fireflash, just 11 to go. Then from somewhere in the mix a hill giant priest cursed me, taking me from 21 death points to -19 death points. Not fun.
Next shot is going to be modified. I got pretty much *nothing* out of the random quests, and it gave me symbiosis, and wasted a lot of time. If I hadn't gotten symbiosis I would have trained a bunch more in spirituality and probably would have resisted that curse. So I'll take like 5 random quests this time, and be careful not to forgetfully go beyond 30 points in necromancy. Forgive my incautiousness with him in death form, this is the first time I've ever used it with any char, so it hadn't dawned on me just how vulnerable you are with a mere 21 "hp" at depth 94.
Chatter
FeathinSilyar: On dungeon level 26 I came across a checkerboard greater vault. Using Recall to jump around in it, I retrieved:
- Angrist
- Fireproof Tomes of Time, Translocation, Hellflame, and Melkor
- Metal Brig. Armor of the Silver Knights
- Mage Staff of Power (+6)
- Long Magic Bow of Extra Shots (+60%)
- Holcolleth
- Lebohaum
- Phial of Galadriel
- Boots of Fyon (Nevrast)
CosmicGerbil Noxious cloud makes pet uniques turn unfriendly? I didn't know that :O
Heh, I bet that Princess Quest for Draconic Quylthulgs was a pain
FeathinSilyar: Well actually, with Essence of Speed and Stone Prison the Draconic Quylthulg quest wasn't too bad. I was fast enough to pretty much kill the dragons as fast as 3-4 Qs would summon them. Once I start getting Greater Qs that summon multiple at once then I'll be in trouble. Well, except that now I've got Wings of the Winds and Grow Trees, so actually Q princess quests will be the easiest quests ever since they'll never get any chance to do me harm.
CosmicGerbil Cool! I always have a problem fighting Q's
What were the Sea Anemones like? I just wondered, because they're a new type of non-moving monster I added in.
FeathinSilyar: 'Bout all I recall from the sea anemones is blasting right through them. :-D Running into various clams and such while dungeon-crawling has startled me many times, but fortunately their melee doesn't seem to be able to knock me out like a death sword would. Haven't lost a char to one of these new sessile creatures yet. Most of my low-level tries I have lost to gerbils, actually, by accidentally targetting them with manathrust when they come into view and thinking them a mouse or whatever. Hm, I think Theme/Fury has made it so it won't auto-target neutral creatures; perhaps you could do the same?
CosmicGerbil Oops, I'd better toughen up the new sessile creatures then
I won't do it until the comp is over though.
Making it so you cannot target neutral creatures is a good idea. I'll look at Theme and FuryMod and find out how to do it. I'll do that for my pet uniques too
FeathinSilyar: I think those uniques (Slash and his friend) are already non-autotargettable since they are coalined. The problem with him was only because he wandered into my Noxious Cloud. Not sure if you can make them not attack when they are attacked, or that you would/should make them do that.
CosmicGerbil OK then, I'll just do the gerbils and grues
CosmicGerbil Oops, not sure if I should make it so that you cannot target neutral creatures. Because if you are doing a princess or FF quest and you have to kill such monsters, would it become impossible if you could not target them?
FeathinSilyar: No, you just have to use the direction keys then.
CosmicGerbil Cool OK, the gerbils and grues will be given the no target flag.
How is Feathin, your Foxan sorcerer coming on?
FeathinSilyar: Ah, sorry, I've been playing Galactica Anno Dominari and X-Com Terror From the Deep recently. I just beat a game of Galactica and nearly have TFTD finished, so I'm nearly back to this chap.
CosmicGerbil Hey, I've been reading the updates. I know what you mean about the princess, she hardly ever gives any decent rewards.
Oh dear, I thought the Incubus had got poison resistance. He is meant to have it, so I'll have to fix that.
I did remove the rings of power, sorry. I was trying to make Gerband more D&D like and less Tolkien like. I'll make up some new rings that are powerful and randomly scatter them through the dungeon.
Sorry that my pet uniques are so annoying
Maybe I should give them the JOKEANGBAND flag, so that you can choose to turn them off. Or maybe just make them really rare.
Would you like a hint on how to find the potion? If you would I'll post one up on my main Gerband Quest page.
FeathinSilyar: The Incubus probably does have poison resistance, but this was high-level noxious cloud so it depends on breath without air. At any rate, I remembered that you can dismiss coalined anyway, so they aren't a problem anymore. I just tell them to go away. :-D
I'll try to find the potion without any hints first...I'll just keep heading down until I can't go down any farther and then just scum for interesting uniques and watch for unidentified potions.
CosmicGerbil OK then
Good luck in finding the potion.
CosmicGerbil Ah, sorry to hear Feathin your Foxan sorcerer is dead
I was really enjoying reading his adventures.
