Dwalin is my first attempt at a Stonewright (war-priest of Aule). I don't think I've ever played a dwarf before - I tend to choose intrinsically stealthy races; then again, with 2.3.0 getting rid of the intrinsic bonuses to the sneakiness/saving throw/magic device stuff I figured I'd try, and test out what it's like to worship Aule at the same time. He's just finished fourth (or fifth?) God quest, right after getting through the Orc caves. It's been slow-going, not to mention there were a few unfortunate deaths before I managed to get Dwalin off the ground. Firebrand is very handy against evil ones, though I'm relying on wands of manathrust and noxious cloud for large groups more so than on Firebrand, but still, Dwalin's prayer skill is sufficiently high now to deal holy-fire splash damage, which has been invaluable against Uruks (who resist poison).
Chatter
Doing okay so far, except I'd just cleared out a huge checkerboard vault in the Withered Heath (that's the Sandworm lair in ToME proper). Nothing but worms in a vault full of Tomes, various (excellent) items and artifacts. The RNG must be planning a particularly nasty death for this one. He's having trouble keeping his piety positive - seems like every time he forgets to detect traps, he sets off an offend deity trap. ![:\](/wiki/tome/img/ohwell.png ":\"){kind=small}
And he lost a lot of piety for killing Khim - Aule hates it when his followers kill dwarves. For a dwarf, that's not a huge handicap, since their kin are usualy neutral to them anyway (in Theme), only the uniques stay hostile. Of course, there's also a bigger penalty for killing uniques, but nothing like those durned light-green traps.
... and Dwalin is dead at clvl40, while doing a quest for 20 spider quylthulgs - who summoned Araneas and Elder Araneas almost all the time, and even the ability to duck into mountains didn't save me. The spider-summoning got really out of control and it was either take off the Anchor or mass-geno. Let's just say I didn't realize there were *that many* spiders in the room I was facing. Dead by mass genocide, that's a classic. Overall, he didn't play much different from a magic-using warrior, I will need to think about ways to make Aule more interesting.
