In T-Engine3 has new sound/music capabilities and so it would be nice to have an actual music and some sounds for the game. So this is a call to all that can do sound/music work to come and lend a hand to make ToME a better game!
Module format music is preferred. See Module Developers Discussion/Sound for details.
Thanks

NeilStevens: Just a note to composers and would-be composers: please make sure that if you're making title or background music, that it loops nicely, since we'll have to do that in-game.
ReenenLaurie: I dunno if it's that important... A pause of a couple of seconds doesn't really bother me... But it is better if it loops seemlessly I guess. It won't be very hard to make the thing I wrote loop endlessly. It ends on the same notes that it starts on.
CosmicGerbil: Is music still needed for Alpha 9? Only I have a tune I have wrote. If it is wanted, where do I post it up?
DarkGod: Lol yes, many many snogs are still needed
Send the musics to be in module format if possible Thanks
CosmicGerbil: OK then
The one I am sending that I wrote isn't very long...it's more of a sample really. Oh yeah and *warning* it gets stuck in your head easily
DarkGod: Looks interresting http://au.geocities.com/lochok/Leitmotif/
ReenenLaurie: Yes, indeed an interesting read, and to an extend I've been trying to get a nice "ToME" theme going, but the themes I get - I just realise they'll bore me to death.
I am playing around with a drum beat for a theme as well... Anyway, DG, I've not forgotten about the project, it's just that I am too critical of my own stuff...
But I am thinking now that I should maybe look back to my previous mod to find inspiration for a "theme".
DarkGod: Well show us your tries we could help you
CosmicGerbil: I really don't know how to use Schism Tracker
I don't know how much more help I can be with music because I just don't know how to make mod files. I can make midis and post them to anyone if they would like to use my compositions, but remake them as mods. Other than that I don't reckon I can do much more, sorry everyone
NeilStevens: Could you post your donated compositions in sheet music form? That'd help people, I'm sure.
CosmicGerbil: OK I will get to work on doing that
ReenenLaurie: Sure you can send them to me rlaurie@gmail.com and I'll try to remake them. I've been learning new stuff about tracking as I've gone along, but still sometimes get stuck. OpenMPT is by far the best (easiest) tracker I've used, and is somewhat documented (a tutorial, and a skeleton help-file) with a big forum to ask questions. Midis are probably preferable to sheet music.
I'll send my couple of starts of tracks to DG tomorrow. I am working on a march which is decent, and I just need to enlongate it a bit. 30 seconds is too short, and becomes repetitive quick.
ReenenLaurie: UPDATE: please send your midi's in a ZIP file (not because of size, but because of my company's media download policies etc.)
CosmicGerbil: You prefer midis, yay
They will be much easier to send than music, cos I'm not very good at writing music. Because my midis are all recorded as piano, I'll tell you what the instruments originally were. Thanks for that
NeilStevens: Yes, since unfortunately our battle system doesn't give us occasional breaks from the primary background music, we have to break it up in other ways.
DarkGod: Dont think this awy, think the other way around, tell me what you imagine and i'll make it happen(or tell you how follish you are to think of that ;> )
BucketMan: Ok.
Any chance for there to be a means of intelligently interacting with the current music score? For instance...it would be very nice for bards to be able to 'play' a song, have a real song actually play, and have the magical effect last for as long as the music, then stop. As is, I've only been able to figure out how to have constant music based on location.
ReenenLaurie: I believe the control of the music is/will be luafied as well, so anything is possible. Theme of Peter and the wolf when you're fighting a pack of jackals etc.
DarkGod: Well you can play/stop music that should be enough for all intents and purposes
I'll add a hook for when music ends too but not before we can all switch to the SDL interface(because it needs it). So .. /me whips Eric!
From the /OldChatter :
CosmicGerbil: How do you change the piano instrument? Power metal doesn't go well with a piano. Although I guess I could write a ragtime score for Bree. (Just kidding about that last bit)
ReenenLaurie: Well, this kinda inspired me, so I think my next challenge will be to make a ragtime for Bree...
I read up some on ragtime, and I think this link is very informative, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragtime_progression - for those who want to know what a typical ragtime is based on.
CosmicGerbil: Lol, I never thought anybody would take up my idea
I do like ragtime though, so it'll be well groovy to hear some in Bree.
ReenenLaurie: I remember playing Laura Bow, Dagger of Amon Ra, which was set in 1920's. The ragtime tunes were great and really set the atmosphere. Also, The Entertainer is one of my favourite piano pieces to listen to (I can't play piano...)
CosmicGerbil: I can play The Entertainer and some other ragtime too on my keyboard. If I had midi leads I could transfer my keyboard playing to my computer
Just wondering, is The Entertainer in the public domain for music now, as it was written so long ago? If it was, it could be used on ToME.
AndrewSidwell: Yes. It was written c.1902. There is sheet music and a MIDI file available here: http://www.mutopiaproject.org/cgibin/piece-info.cgi?id=263 . There are various others available, too http://www.mutopiaproject.org/cgibin/make-table.cgi?collection=joplin&preview=1 .
CosmicGerbil: Groovy, thanks for the links dude
*Is listening to the music*.
KermitCrill: I have a few older s3m format pieces that might be usable, or adaptable: http://www.kermix.com/kc_t3_mods.zip
