Simon: Since I got confused so bad about the level feelings I actually had them in reverse of what they are, I think we should color code them like the abilities.
For example, the "you feel your luck is turning" sounds better than "you have a superb feeling" to ALL people who I've talked to whose native tongue is French from Quebec (6 people). Yet english people believed the reverse was true most of the time.
Ideally we should have a colored word saying what the level feeling is somewhere in the left paner or status bar.
Examples:
Feeling: PANIC! {in red} (as in, you're above your head in unusual things. You will probably die if you stay)
Feeling: lucky {in green} (risk and/or rewards! Don't tell them if it's monsters or items!)
Feeling: hopeful {in yellow} (some risks, some rewards, nothing really outstanding)
Feeling: dull {in gray} (Boring!)
some chatter
Simon: The level of the character should be included in calculations, so that greater vaults of out of depth level 8 monsters in a level 2 dungeon guarding a level 3 randart would register as dull for the level 47 character who is there just because of the beastmaster. The level 1 player would however get a red feeling.
Fates should be stated when known. I didn't pay to get my fate known just to NOT being reminded what it is when I enter the level! This prevents micromanagement and constant looking at the quest screen before using stairs... (especially for level 1 things; sometimes I get 12 at once and one might be an artifact)
Level feelings should UPDATE once in a while, so that when I got/killed the special stuff I know I'm done. When the preserve mode is off I *never* know for sure if the level contained *2* artifacts...
MayLith: The colors are going to be debatable. To me, yellow is more of a "warning" color than is green. (U.S. traffic lights use red for stop, yellow for caution, and green for go.)
I disagree with the level updating -- It makes it too easy to scum a level. (Neil convinced me.)
Personally, I like the way Z's level feelings are done. See here for some discussion Neil and I had.
Simon: In any case you're refering to Zangband (Z's level feelings)?
MayLith: Only in part. I had another idea as well, but Neil talked me out of it.
Link fixed.
