Orvin: How about a new weapon damage type, flay, which would be applied to attacks that tear skin from the opponent? Whips and things with whip-like appendages could do flay damage, as well as some combat gloves, claws, etc. Monsters without skin or some skin-like layer could be immune to this type of damage.
FeathinSilyar: You mean monsters without any kind of shreddable "flesh", not just skin. Also AC should give a high resistance to flaying. Slimes and jellies, assuming they aren't supposed to have organs, could be hurt normally by it. Molds and mushrooms would be rather vulnerable to it, since it would shred them.
NeilStevens: Well, a module could do it easily. I'm not sure what adding a new weapon type would do for us, though. We already have five in ToME 3, not counting demonology and mage staves.
Orvin: Adding a damage type, especially if some monsters are especially susceptible to it, can increase strategizing. Also, it seems that the flaying action of whips, etc. is not really represented by the current types. Having your skin ripped off is something quite different.
NeilStevens: Whips aren't in the game. And we already have many damage types, from crushing, slashing, and piercing, to magic elemental types. Plus we're going to have a bunch of slays and brands on top of that for strategy.
I think at some point there is a diminishing return to a new damage type in combat, but if used by modules this could be proven wrong.
