In Angband there seem to be quite a lot of low-level monsters that have been leveled way up. This is generally not a big issue, but occasionally something odd crops up - like, for instance, a pack of level-50 Novice Rogues, which in game terms really ought to be a gang of Master Thieves or whatever. So, two suggestions:
- When generating a leveled-up monster, first check if there are more powerful variants. If there are, change the monster into the variant that's closest (rounding down) to the level it's supposed to be, and level it up from there. This way, for example, a level 45 Novice Mage would become a level 45 Mage, and a level 52 one would become a level 52 Old Sorceror.
- Check for available ego types for monsters, and give at least some of them a small additional chance of occuring with each added level. A band of Angband orcs would for instance be more likely to contain rogues, priests, and shamans than orcs in Moria.
