KhymChanur: Letting monsters give the player a temporary vulnerability (via a spell or an attack) to certain damage types could be an interesting way to make some monsters nastier (and could also be used for traps, or for the effects of harmful potions and scrolls). Besides variations in the duration and power of the vulnerability, it could vary among following way of selecting damage types:
- A certain fixed damage type, so the player always knows what s/he is dealing with.
- A random damage type to which you can gain immunity, so that if you have some immunities covered you might get lucky, and if you have them all covered you have nothing to worry about.
- A random damage type to which there is no immunity, but to which the player can achieve resistance.
- A random damage type which is unresistible, just to make it even worse.
- Randomly select two or more from one of the above categories.
- Randomly select one from each of the above categories.
All of the damage types from one of the above categories.
The damage types used could include slashing, piercing and crushing, which would have the effect of reducing the effectiveness of the player's armour.
