In ToME 3, Phase Door still generates void jumpgates at level 30. This seems awfully cheesy to me. IMHO it would be better to have the spell give controlled teleportation at level 30, and let you teleport in a random direction by selecting the space your PC is standing on (where the cursor would start) - like Mindcraft's Minor Displacement, but without the jumpgates. I think this would make it more useful, and perhaps less exploitable.
Orvin: Could also nerf phase door by making the void jumpgates it creates temporary (e.g., lasting for only a few turns or for only a few jumps).
LordEstraven: That would work, but it would render the spell rather less useful. I just think it would be a good idea to make the spell (still) more useful at higher levels, without involving the cheesiness of player-generated voidgates. Making voidgates temporary is an interesting idea though.
ShadUs: It does seem kinda weird that void jumpgates get generated by one of the least power teleportation spells and that the higher power spells don't generate them.
ReenenLaurie: Hmmmm... I think the ability to create void gates is so useful that it could be set on a whole different class/skill. Maybe if you make it an ability that can be bought for 5 skill points at 30 conveyance.
ShadUs: Shhhhhhh! I rely on those jump gates and don't take conveyance to nearly that high ;P
RavenRed: Targetted Teleport, but only in LOS would be my 2cworth. Teleport should be the "out of sight" teleport option, especially by the time that you've enough conveyance to use it reliably.
LordEstraven: That sounds like the best way to do it.
NeilStevens: For what it's worth, I don't think this is something that needs changing. ToME 2 doens't need to be made harder, and I really doubt ToME 3 will need it either, heh.
LordEstraven: Okay then... It's actually making the game easier by letting you specify a safe location, as opposed to risking a trip from frying pan to fire.
NeilStevens: Clearly you lack the battleground set up experience I have, heh. Without phase door as-is, I couldn't have beaten Morgoth with almost no hit points, for example. Using a void gate is zero fail and costless, besides, so it's better all around.
LordEstraven: Bah, that's horribly cheesy! But I see your point. I still feel that a source of controlled teleportation would be handy, but that's your decision.
