I just started playing ToME a few weeks ago (as I write this). My first experience with Rogue-likes was Moria. I never had a winner and quickly (quickly meaning "after a month or so") got bored with the game. I made a program in QuickBasic that streamlined character selection and automated save-scumming. (As an aside, I didn't know what save-scumming was and thought that Moria was meant to be played in a multiplayer environment (though I couldn't see exactly how that would work). I also ended up including a screen-saver and some other fun ish that I can't quite remember. Even with save-scumming and wizard-moding a Ranger to level 50 I still couldn't beat the Balrog, so I gave the game up as unbeatable. (I now realize that I wasn't focusing on equipment enough and that it would (of course) be too easy for any (or even just the most powerful class) level 50 character to be able to beat the Balrog without the appropriate tools. Oh well.) Since I started playing ToME I've already modified the code a bit. I've not done anything original (yet), but these modifications are the reason that I first posted on the forum and here, on the wiki.
Characters
I've actually been too lazy to mess around with uploading character dumps, but I might as well list some here:
Dead: Dorg, a level 35 Troll Barbarian Swordsmaster worshipping Tulkas
- Points in Combat, Weaponmastery, Swordsmastery, Magic-Device, Disarming
Afulath, a level ?? Wood-elf Ranger worshipping Yavanna
- Points in Combat, Archery, Magic-Device, Prayer, Conveyance, Divination, Nature
Lots of other characters
Alive: Zabogorgin, a level 34 Deathmold Possessor (possessing the Watcher) worshipping Melkor
- (I didn't come up with this build myself, so...)
Dorg's Soul, a level 33 Lost Soul Troll Swordsmaster worshipping Melkor
- Points in Combat, Weaponmastery, Swordsmastery, Magic-Device, Prayer, Stealth
- If you can't tell, I've been partial to warriors. Zabogorgin was a bit of fun while he was possessing Eol, though, so I'm going to start a mage up at some point. (I just need to have a different starting strategy... I've always been able to just run through the Bree house quest at level 1 with my warriors... I can't do that with a magic user.)
