Thrown items

Most thrown items deal only a low amount of damage to the target (0, 1, or 1d2). Weapons, bolts, shots, and arrows cause their normal weapon damage. These items are omitted from the table below.

Most potions deal 1 point of damage, but Potions of Weakness (3d12), of Death (20d20), of Ruination (20d20) and of Detonations (25d25) are notable exceptions. After hitting the target, a potion is destroyed and the target is affected by additional splash damage, explained below.

Some artifacts deal also a high amount of damage: The Palantir of Minas Ithil (10d10), the Palantir of Orthanc (10d10), the Wand of Thrain (10d10), the Gnarled Staff of Mithrandir (10d4).

Potion splash damage

Potions "smash open" and cause an area effect when

  1. they are shattered while in the player's inventory, due to cold (etc.) attacks;
  2. they are thrown at a monster, or obstacle;
  3. they are shattered by cold or sound attacks while lying on the floor.

Some other potions (salt water, slime mold juice, lose memories, decrease <stat>, water, apple juice) only anger the creatures in a radius 2 zone.

All other potions don't have an effect.
