Anyone have any ideas for my L50 priest? http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=2891. I'd really like a winner.... one of these decades...

ZasVid: I'd recommend pushing up symbiosis to 25 and fetching some mass-summoning nice light-green symbiote at the bottom of SLoM (using scrolls). However, I'm concerned with your HPs, they may not be enough to survive wiping breaths of the boss out there. Consider going there with some constitution-enablers as swap kit - ie. Sting AND Evenstar AND Thorin. Don't give up speed for CON, though, and remember to summon first. Once having a nice scaly mass of magical flesh on your back, you should be fine ;-)

MayLith: Hmm... I was planning on pushing up symbiosis, yes, though I was hoping to get more from FumbleFingers if possible, first. Re: the Boss -- please see my (spoily) question on Spoilers/Dungeons/SacredLandOfMountains

amaurea: Your hp are a little low, yes. You should try as hard as you can to max your con. Have you done the troll army quest? Looking at your hp I would expect that you haven't. Your mage staff could have been better (+12 or power should not be impossible to find), but your manathrust should be doing good damage - more than my character. I don't think that getting symbiosis is such a good idea. Not every character should be a summoner in my opinion, and will summons play nice with the rest of your strategy? Lay of Protection, would probably be broken right away, and they obscure your line of sight and other things. With a bit more hp your char is plenty strong enough to kill morgoth as it is.

MayLith: Troll army's been done, sadly. The only quests this character still has left are:

I didn't realize you could find +12 staves, but indeed I have been looking for a better mage staff. Manathrust is currently 58d23; I'd rather find + to power than to mana, I think. Re: Symbiosis, I usually tell pets to "seek and destroy", but that's part of why I haven't put extra points into it, yet, too (aside from wanting more modifier from FF); I've been using Lay of Protection for only a while now, and am still getting used to it. FWIW, I'm not really into mass summoning; I prefer a few pets, and am more likely to get them from totems than from symbiosis. I tend to use Symbiosis more as a HP sump than anything.

ReenenLaurie: Leviathans are available on the deep water squares in the wilderness. Krakens and greater krakens also dwell there, but any level 50 chars worth their salt should be able to survive krakens and greaters on the open sea. I've *once* managed to kill a biggy (can't recall what) with the help of some coaligned wavelords and a potion of detonations. (ermmm... come to think of it, I think I killed a wavelord, which barely survived the breath of a kraken or something)

MayLith: Thanks. I've avoided the deep water for the most part. I know I could find them there (in fact, I killed a few Leviathans in the Submerged Ruins, but none of them dropped :( ). The thing is, this is the first L50 character I've had (in ToME anyway) and I really don't want to blow it on a Greater Kraken. This char doesn't have the best HP, so I'm being a touch wary...

DanielJoo: "* Poisoned Water Quest (and AFAIK the reward for that is now useless as I'm maxed)" If you are referring to potion of augmentation, that is the spider quest. Poisoned water is rewarded by some useless armor iirc.

RavenRed: Well if a Elvenkind DragonScale Armour is USELESS for YOU... (Hmmm... well when you look at her level, I suppose so!)

ReenenLaurie: Just don't get ambushed... you can press < when in trouble (if you're not cut, or poisoned).

Maylith: Whups, thanks DanielJoo, you are right. That's what I get for posting when tired! Still, the Armor isn't the greatest for this particular character. :)

MayLith:

ZV:

MayLith: Thanks! I'll try that. I'll have to Thunderlord back in to SLoM. I got sidetracked by Angband -- I actually made it down a few levels, stopping just short of the Crypt, though I did have to bail on those blasted Nycas. And I'm not just teleporting down to visit Trone. This is the first time I've done SLoM, I figure I'll do it the right way. :)

Get this: I just found a Robe of Permanence. It has all the normal sustains, plus:

That's the best RoP I've ever seen (though admittedly I haven't seen zillions). Thankfully I've got fire immunity elsewhere, otherwise I'd be ripping my hair out over the Rag of the Wight...

MayLith: I just found a double-immunity shield (fire and electricity), so hopefully with some juggling I can boost up my AC some, once I get Luthien -- which is next on the table. I hope.

I do believe I lucked out in the extreme, but basically Trone went down with barely a whimper. I posted a cmovie of it over on oook. Later: Same thing with Glaurung: easy. I'm trying to figure out what to do next -- hit the Illusory castle to look for shops, I guess.

Any suggestions on what I should bump my Spirtuality up to?

SoulWynd: Until you get it to legendary I guess. It seems that at that level, it resists most attacks AFAIK. Good thing that you have symbiosys, it will help with the hp and if you pump it up enough it will even give you some nice powers.

NeilStevens: Anyway, what do you attack with? Manathrust? What level is that at?

MayLith: My main attacks are Manathrust (L55, 58d23), Mindwave (L18, d230), occasional Pulverize, Pyshcic Drain, and Telekinetic Wave. (I keep forgetting about those last two.) I intend to max out Mindcraft, but I'm hoping to get another few points out of FF before I blow skill points on it.

I've noticed that I haven't bothered with any summoning for some time now. The light absorption junkart is very handy for ringwraith disposal, and the geno and mass geno junkarts get fairly regular use. Oh yes, and I discovered that those wands of Fireflash are *very* nice indeed. They get me past the Nycadaemons. (One flash per, at holy fire level, then I Manathrust them to death.)

NeilStevens: That's very interesting. I never realized using Mana from Prayer was that practical. Then again, I never expected that trapping was capable of doing lots of damage either, but someone went and killed Morgoth with it, so it just shows how this game rewards the persistent and skillful, not the lucky.

MayLith: Well, granted she *is* using a Mage Staff of Power to boost it. I had hopes, but didn't know how good it would get, since I've never played a ToME mage... but OTOH I didn't know what the heck else to use! Mindcraft is good for early/midgame, but just doesn't pack enough of a punch later on, except for clearing out incidentals. (Which, I admit, I'm doing a lot of, so it's good for that.)

Eru priests don't seem to be set up as melee priests. If you're going to use Manathrust, a Mage staff is in order... Cirad's carrying a Mage Staff of Power (+10), and in fact I just found a (+11) Staff which I want to enchant up, since I do still occasionally whap things over the head. Even set on coward, with 9 blows a round she does around 156hp damage (364hp on berserker), which, while absolutely pathetic by fighter standards, is sometimes better than wasting mana on some weak monster.

I'll change over to a Mage Staff of Wizardry if I can find one good enough, but right now spell level's far more important than the mana. So far, I've very, very rarely run out. (But if I do find a Staff of Wizardry, I might be able to swap out the Rag of the Wight...)

MayLith: Updated dump.

I polished off the Illusory Castle...and by the way, it really wasn't THAT annoying. Small levels may have helped. Anyway, it gained me Beor, the Bow of Bard, Colannon, a single dungeon town, another version of Adunaphel's ring, and also (of course) the Helm of Knowledge, which I promptly sold. I liked finding Bard (first time for me) but overall it seemed like a waste. The town had an expensive black market, but nothing interesting in it.

Now what? I've done everything but the Paths of the Dead, Mount Doom, and the rest of Angband. I don't know if it's worth it to do the Paths. Also, I killed off a lot of uniques (Shelob, etc) before I got the One Ring quest, so it looks like I get to do this the difficult way....? I've never gotten this far before!

MayLith: Updated dump again.

I went joyriding through Erebor a second time, looking for potions. I hung out on the bottom for a while -- it was rather fun, really -- but the trip got cut short by a rather embarassing accident involving a Trap of Silent Switching, Dwar's ring and Marda's Coat. (eep!) That incarnation of Dwar's ring was actually a decent one aside from the exp drain, and the Coat's aggravation wasn't noticeable. I saw only a small effect from the Mana drain, but I didn't know if it would suddenly get worse when I needed mana the most, so I got out of there. Bother! :/ I've got that fixed, though; I copied Remove Curses onto my kit. Don't know why I didn't do that earlier...

I haven't seen any rod tips of Healing yet -- anyone know what their typical depth is?

I haven't found the One yet, and I think I'm going to have to get it from Sauron, as (afaik) all the other potential bearers are dead already. Wraiths can't drop it, can they?

Now I'm debating going back into Erebor, or doing the Paths of the Dead for the heck of it. Or Mt. Doom? Is Mt. Doom harder than early/mid-level Angband? (Crypt done; I've been down to Angband 72 so far, and I know I can easily take the Princess quest on that level -- only 5 Nycas.) I've got immunity to fire.

SoulWynd: Hm, dlvl 80 for the rod tip of healing.

ZasVid: Well, Mt. Doom? Levels 85-99. Only fiery and standard level monsters though - no water hounds, but lots and lots of demons AND angels, some dragons, some tough undead, all high-end uniques, you can't dig at all. It's IMHO safer than angband on equivalent depth, but more dangerous than its lower levels. In angband you can always dig an anti-summoning corridor, you often encounter "threats" like pack of leveled orcs, Mt. Doom just throws nasty monsters at you and leaves you to deal with them just where you stand.

The One and Only Ring we all wantsssses... can be dropped only by one of six monsters, namely Shelob, Watcher, Ar-Pharazon, Feagwath, Glaurung and last but not least Sauron.

But you don't need to hurry, you anyway need to get to Angband 100, so get there gathering loot and experience, preparing for Sauron and Morgy as well as you can. This way you shouldn't encounter any problems.

SoulWynd: Boy, did I get the wrong flag? *stops messing with edit files* At least I meant to say Sauron, never try remembering names when it's late at night. One been in Mt. Doom with one character, unfortunatelly he wasn't called Frodo and died right after in angband instead.

MayLith: OWW!!! I just got my clock cleaned on Angband 70. Still alive, but it was a very, very near thing. It all started out with the situation shown over on oook. Then, I mis-keyed using my Light Absorption junkart, and failed to kill the Ringwraith, who summoned *ANOTHER* Ringwraith (plus a lot of other nasties.) I tried to stand and fight, but it rapidly was made clear to me that that was the ultimate in stupidity. I managed to live long enough to make a void jumpgate right next to a stairway and scrambled down it. Down to 28 HP at one point... whew!!!

SoulWynd: Yeah, I've had the same experience with a sorcerer before. The darkelf one who died. A good thing to carry around is anything able to cast teleport away. It wont get rid of some nasties but at least will move away the annoying lil creatures, giving you some time to deal with the situation.
