A development version of part of the Doc I've been thinking about for a while, and dreading doing. This is brand new, not a rewrite. And, I might add, rather messy/incomplete right now!

Introduction

Once you get the game installed <link here to any future install help pages>, double-click on the game icon, and follow the on-screen instructions until you get to character generation.

After pressing 'a', you are prompted to enter the case-sensitive savefile name for your character. If you type nothing, the default savefile name is 'PLAYER'. <note file location>

The introduction will march by; follow the instructions on the screen to continue. Then you will see a screen with a random character name and some instructions.

If you've had other characters in ToME, a yes/no prompt to use quickstart will appear. If you answer 'yes' to quickstart, your new character will have the same attributes as the last one you played.

If you answer 'no' to quickstart (or the quickstart prompt does not appear) you will enter the main character generation phase. Many of the following choices can be randomized by typing '*' instead of entering a specific choice.

Character generation options

While you are in character generation, you will see a prompt "= for options".

  1. Character generation options:
    1. Maximize stats
    2. Preserve artifacts: If you select no, any artifact generated on your current dungeon level will go away forever.
    3. Specify 'minimal' stats: During character generation, allows you to specify minimal stats for the autoroller. If you spec them too high, you may spend a long time with the autoroller...
    4. Generate character using a point system
    5. Generate persistent dungeons (experimental): Not recommended.
    6. Always generate very unusual rooms: Ironman option; creates extremely out of depth dungeon levels, monsters, etc.
    7. Allow notes to be written to a file: Lets you append brief notes to a file <note filename and location!> with the ':' command.

    8. Automatically note important events: Appends notes of uniques killed, etc, to file <note filename/loc>

    9. Fast autoroller (not available on multiuser systems)
    10. Allow use of lovecraftian monsters: Some Lovecraftian monsters may appear.
    11. Allow use of 'Zangbandish' monsters: Some monsters seen in Zangband may appear.
    12. Allow use of some 'joke' monsters: Some joke monsters may appear.
    13. Always make small levels: Dungeon levels tend to be small, if not tiny.
    14. You can receive fates, good or bad: Turns on the fates option <link this>

Gender

You will be prompted to chose a gender, if you wish. Gender does not affect the mechanics of gameplay, though it is important to some players for role-playing reasons.

Race

You will next be prompted to choose a race. Options for standard ToME are:

Subrace

You will next be prompted to choose a subrace. Depending on which race you have already chosen, some subraces may not be available, but the list includes:
(link in)

  1. Classical (the "vanilla" normal subrace)
  2. Hermit (studious)
  3. LostSoul (extremely difficult and not recommended for new players)

  4. Skeleton
  5. Spectre
  6. Vampire
  7. Zombie

Chatter

MayLith: This is a scratch version of something I want to place into documentation. It's both a mess and incomplete at the moment. Many of the bulleted lists (and maybe other items, too) should be simple links to elsewhere... though, for the ease of reading for new users, maybe a very very brief description appended to some links would be appropriate. I don't know....

kfoelsch: Short descriptions for newbies sounds like a good idea to me...
