Wish list for god-related behaviors
IngeborgNorden: Does T-Engine currently allow the features I'm listing here? Please let me know, if you're able; I'd appreciate that a lot.
- I want to change the screen message about player religion from "You worship X..." to "You are dedicated to X..." (Since I'm adding patron-saint and angel listings to Norseband's version of the medieval Church, the description should be accurate for all faiths.)
In a later release, I hope to record multiple piety scores, one for each deity/patron in a given set (e.g., all Norse gods or all Church patrons). That would allow characters who are favored by God X, but hated by God Y--a common enough situation in real-world mythologies. Characters who manage to get enough piety with two deities could cast spells from both god-schools; however, they could also anger both deities and suffer from twice as many curses. How does the player learn all that information? A new menu for piety listings will appear among the "~ key" options; the character's status with each god/patron would be listed in general terms. For instance--
- You are highly favored by Odin.
- You are treated indifferently by Thor.
You are an enemy of Hel. (...and so on)
If the character has dedicated himself to one favorite god, that favorite will be highlighted in a different color from the rest of the list. If he's an atheist (but still able to convert), the main screen would simply say "The gods haven't noticed you yet." without bringing up a menu. Characters whose race/class forbids worshiping a god would see, "You don't care what *any* god thinks of you."
- How do you divide gods into sub-groups (i.e., pantheons of one specific culture)? I plan to restrict some races/subraces to following one group of gods, but hope that I won't have to relist the individual names each time.
- How can gods accept offerings other than the usual items/life force (as Melkor does in ToME 2)? I'm hoping that Church patrons in Norseband will be able to take donated gold for piety.
- On a related note, does the engine check value bonuses for magic-item offerings (good or bad)? Does it check the depth and rarity of monster offerings? Both behaviors seem logical, since gods typically know about those things.
