Basics

War, war never changes. The end of the world happened pretty much how we predicted. To many humans, not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons as always: purely human ones.

The Earth was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing. An atomic spark struck by human hands. Quickly raged out of control. Spears of nuclear fire rained from the skies. Continents were swallowed in flames, and fell beneath the boiling oceans.

Humanity was almost extinguised, their spirits becoming part of the background radiation. That blanketed the Earth. A quiet darkness fell accross the planet... lasting many years.

FALLOUT !

How to get it

In order to get it we have to make it. The idea I(DarkGod) had in mind was to make it in a comunity kind of way.

Why ? Mainly because I alone will not have time to make it, yet I probaly will want to lend a hand sometimes.

I can probably create the game rules beacuse that's what I do the best (;> ) but not the game world(beacuse i'm so lazy).

So we are officialy recruiting people interrested in making this project happen. Obviously TobiasParker should want to come I suppose, as for otehrs you're welcome. The only requirement is that you can get cvs to work so that we can synchronize. I have arranged with Pav to get restricted accounts on cvs so you can get accounts without fear of borking something else.

Stuff to do

First things first, finish the initial module setup to get the engine to load it. Then we can start additing the game rules and some content. Sounds easy I know .. it is ;>

Chatter

DarkGod: Come on, nobody is interested?

NeilStevens: According to Eric Raymond's analysis in the Cathedral and the Bazaar, this kind of development won't work until someone buckles down and publishes something working and usable.

DarkGod: Yeah I know, I have committed a half working thing now ;)

Shoob: I would be willing to do descriptions, maps, etc, I am still reading the source so once I get a basic idea of how it works, I might help more.

SkizzaltixZaxali: I have a lot of free time and I'd like to help out with module stuff, but what is cvs?

BucketMan: I might be persuaded to participate, but I never played the original game. I've read over what wikipedia has to say about it, but what sort of general concept were we aiming for? The mechanics of the skill system shouldn't be terribly difficult to implement. But what's the meat or fun part of the game that we really want to capture?

DarkGod: The world, the twisted humour, it would make a very nice setting for some adventures. The world's really really really great.

PeterWiersig: I'm interested. I can code C and I think I can wrangle Lua. I have both games and manuals available. Also Fallout Tactics. Can we get isometric hex display code for this module ;)

DarkGod: Isometric hex display perhaps not ;> Ok then the basic stuff I've made is in cvs in the module "fallin". Currently we need ot get the module to actaully load in the engine(it lacks many files, like well objects, monsters, ...). Then we'll add the basic gameplay rules(I've already started) and basic monsters & items. Once we are there we can start implementing the story :) Can you check out the fallin module and compared it to ODE and try making it run ? Oh you can code C, so I suppose you can compile the engine yourself, in which case it'd be best if you work against the current CVS instead of latest alpha(of which there will be a new one soon actaully). Thanks!
