Description

I think Gregory Benford's Galactic Center series is surprisingly well suited to be a roguelike game. A lot of the details need to be changed -- the series is hard science fiction after all -- but not the fundamental nature of the game.

The Galactic Center series contains

  1. In the Ocean of Night

  2. Across the Sea of Suns

  3. Great Sky River

  4. Tides of Light

  5. Furious Gulf

  6. Sailing Bright Eternity

and

This module idea is mostly based on the last four books, especially Great Sky River, and A Hunger for the Infinite.

Warning: This module suggestion is getting fairly detailed and is starting to contain significant spoilers to the source material. The sections on game background and gods in particular should be avoided by anyone planning to read the books.

Chatter

MayLith: Sounds fascinating -- I haven't read this book series yet. I do need to say, though, that creating a Roguelike based on a current series of books is likely to cause some of the same problems that Pernband ran into. Cool fun, though!

NerdanelVampire: If anyone wishes to make a game of my suggestion, I guess they should contact Gregory Benford. I have no idea what he thinks of games like this, but I have the impression Anne McCaffrey is in the minority among the writers.

MayLith: Yep re: contacting Benford. Regarding McCaffrey, I've corresponded with her in the past; I won't say anything else.

raduga: From the little contact I've had with Benford (at conventions and the like), I suspect he'd be at least sympathetic to a mod project ( might still say "no", but he'd appreciate the thought.) He'd likely want assurance that he retain rights. But don't be afraid to ask!
