There are no gods but some entities can get surprisingly close.
God Quests in General
God quests are conceptually quite different from the ones in ToME. The idea is that your "god" can take over your nervous system and create an immersive virtual reality experience to test you. This virtual reality is unpredictable in its physical aspects but is likely to be quite different from Snowglade. You might get things like lava streams or open water with water monsters or something in the style of the Heart of the Earth even. There can still be differences between the "gods" in what they are likely to give you, and there might be one physical attribute that is always present.
Strange monsters can be found in god quests. For example, if there are dragons at all in the entire game it is in these quests. As a easening factor, the player is told when he or she is on the same level with the object of search. It does no good to stair scum; the depth of the object's appearance is predetermined at quest generation. You also cannot leave the quest without failing it.
God quests appear as quest stairways in the dungeon you happen to be in. You can prepare yourself before you enter but you cannot decide to wait and level yourself more than this particular level's worth, or you'll miss the quest. At the end of the quest you are returned to around where you were when you took the quest, meaning the same dungeon level in the same dungeon but not the same map.
The Mantis
The Mantis is a high order mech anthology intelligence with a significant interest in humanity. Its true plans for humans are highly unpleasant from the human point of view, but on the other hand the Mantis has the rare distinction among mechs of not always killing people on sight.
You might ask help from the Mantis and it might even give it to you if you are not more trouble than you are worth.
Your piety quickly decreases with time if you are praying and slowly increases if you aren't. It likes getting expensive items as sacrifices.
The Mantis's Favors
Mental Connection
- Increases saving throw and melee accuracy. On higher levels removes confusion and fear and later yet increases melee damage.
Charm Mech
- Tries to charm a mech. On higher levels becomes a ball and later a view effect.
Cloak of Illusion
- Makes you invisible for a while.
Summon Mech
- Summons a leveled mech to your aid.
The Mantis's Quests
God quests of the Mantis are search for a special never-moving "monster" in a totally random dungeon that might be absolutely anything. Success has a special bonus of extra piety and a special penalty of sanity loss, since you are not only required to find the object of your search...
The Magnetic Mind
The Magnetic Mind lives encoded in the magnetic fields surrounding the Eater of All Things at the center of the galaxy feeding on the infalling matter but can also reach outwards to the nearby stars. It is a cantankerous entity but also sounds like it might like some ego-massage from being worshipped.
The Magnetic Mind's Favors
Aurora
- Streams of charged particles light up the sky, illuminating the room. On higher levels the entire dungeon level is illuminated.
Voice from the Sky
- Tries to stun and scare every monster in sight. On higher levels it also slows monsters.
Hammer of Sound
- A sound that makes the walls and the floor ring like a bell. It damages all the monsters in sight.
Magnetic Field
- Magnetic force field to protect you from harm. (Rune of Protection)
The Magnetic Mind's Quests
God quests have little in the way of walls and if there are any they are usually of a passable variety like mist. In other cases thre might be walls but they behave Heart of the Earth style. There may slight environmental damage of various damage types, basically any that is not judged too evil for a particular dungeon level. Monsters in the quests are totally random.
The Syntony
The Syntony is the most god-like entity on this list and the creator of the Wedge. It is also the most unapproachable and the hardest to understand. It lives on an unknowable level beyond memes and interacts through its underlings. If you are on good terms with it you can get an easy access to the Galactic Library but the Syntony will consider your wishes concerning your own fate immaterial and just use you as a tool for its grand design.
When you go up a level the Syntony may sometimes decide to give you a gift (material or stats) or teleport you somewhere else far away where you are needed more.
The Syntony's Favors
Summon Animal
- Summons a leveled animal to your aid.
Teleport Level
- Teleports you a level up or down.
Library Interface
- Lets you access the Galactic Library, first to identify one item, then more on higher levels.
Earth Current
- Makes the ground rupture below you, producing an earthquake effect, and directs the released force into a very powerful targettable ball of combined electricity, fire, and tidal forces. Targetting the ball is done before the earthquake is triggered so the line of sight remains uninterrupted for the purposes of the spell.
The Syntony's Quests
God quests take place on arena levels.
