NerdanelVampire: This time I went with a weapons fighter who specialized on defense. A buckler turned out to have far-and-away the best AC, so I stuck to that basic buckler.
I wore the creativity circlet through a large part of the game and only switched to the other circlet (which I found late) for the final fight with the Grassman King in order to take advantage of the better AC. It was nice to get to enjoy 17 in creativity. Although I still got lots of rubbish choices, at least I had like four or five different rubbish choices to choose from. Again I lost a great item to lack of money. Early on I saw an ignifuge leather armor but was a few hundred essences short of affording it. Another one never appeared during the entire game although I didn't exactly power-dive.
I put a bunch of points into elemental control, but it didn't decrease the fail rate that much while increasing the mana cost quite a bit so I ended up basically ignoring the entire thing, as my power stat must have been far too low. Plain melee enhanced with magic strike worked well against the Grassman King, the newest dungeon boss.

to 4) damage. EtMarc: About elemental control: I see that you didn't have any source of the Acid Shot and Lightning spells. They are a lot more appropriate for low level elemental controller, since their failure rate is quite lower than for Cold Aura and Fireball. As for mana cost increase vs damage increase, they are supposed to increase in damage slightly faster than in cost, but this fails remarkably at low level because of rounding. I will try to mess around with the numbers for the next version in the hope of improving this problem.
