Angband is a RogueLike game available at http://www.thangorodrim.net/
It is often called "vanilla" Angband to distinguish the game from its variants.
It is ToME's grandparent, as ToME used to be called PernAngband, PernAngband was derived from ZAngband, and ZAngband was derived from Angband.
Chatter
DarkGod: i_'m not so sure it is a good idea to play V before, so many things are different they might get bad habbits and all
NeilStevens: agreed.
ElvishPillager: Well, obviously if your final goal is to play ToME, you should start on ToME first. On the other hand, if you want to get into roguelikes in general, vanilla angband is more "roguelike" than ToME, haha. I reccommend it as a first play for people new to roguelikes.
UserPageKernigh: I had at least one person tell me to play vanilla first. I ignored them because I had experience on NetHack and SLASH'EM. I actually have not tried vanilla yet.
NeilStevens: Whoever told you that was wrong. ToME is not Angband, and should be looked at on its own. If you come at ToME thinking it's an 'Angband variant' then you're going to misunderstand two things for everything you get a head start on.
ZasVid: Angband is chess to ToME's Warhammer Fantasy Battle ;). Sure, both are board games, but you can't exactly carry over anything besides premise of tactical thinking from the former to the latter.
NerdanelVampire: I found starting with Vanilla helpful. I had no experience of roguelikes whatsoever, so all of the commands and symbols were initially hard to remember. Vanilla is so much smaller than ToME that you don't get overwhelmed as easily, and much of the interface and the basic gameplay is the same or similar.
BucketMan: Ok...but having started with Angband, how much do you miss that you didn't play Rogue first? It would have been a good 'primer' for Angband, yes? Hey! Here's a thought...how about we recommend people start with Diablo? It's basically a simplified Angband, right?
NerdanelVampire: Rogue is very different from both Angband and ToME. Remember where those horrible no-good "roguelike" vi-keys come from. Rogue doesn't even draw dungeons remotely Angband-style. And so on. There is no shared code; only some inspiration. And as for Diablo, that's not even ASCII.
Angband plays much like a subset of ToME except for some things like the magic system.
NeilStevens: Yes, he should have said Moria, not Rogue. But I don't see anyone saying that you should play Moria before Angband.
Anyway, given the sheer number of games out there with magic schools and skills and whatnot, I don't see what's so special about Angband that you should play that first.
NerdanelVampire: I think the biggest struggle in learning to play ToME (not well, but enough that one can concentrate on the tactics and strategy) is getting to remember the keys and the symbols. For that Angband is ideal. You learn things like pressing M to get the big map, that 3 sells weapons, that # is granite, and what [1, +2] means. You even learn useful things about spellcasting as despite the differences the basic idea and the mechanics of targetting are the same. ToME is an Angband variant, and you don't learn that kind of stuff from unrelated games even if they have schools of magic (an easy concept to grasp, by the way).
I suppose you could also play Moria, but ToME benefits from changes and improvements that are in Angband but not in Moria, and I think Angband is simple enough for a beginner.
NeilStevens: Huh? I play ToME just fine without having to know what a 3 is, what a # is and all that silliness. Plus, the controls are documented.
NerdanelVampire: In the beginning you are going to be checking the documentation all the time for things like how do you put that armor on again. You don't need extra complications to that. In ToME you may start to play a lost soul geomancer without any idea that it's going to be really complicated, but to avoid that you are going to have to pay careful attention to the help files so that you can make a sensible choice without any practical experience in interpreting what you read. And then there are all those random quest options, and the thieves quest can be really frustrating if you are not aware that it's possible to pick locks and think it's game over (like an amateur reviewer whose review I found on the net once). Angband allows you to get the basics without distractions and thus reduces the initial hump.
(By the way, ASCII is the truth and the way.
