NetHack

It's an old RogueLike game which is still in development or so they say.

SoulWynd: I don't like it all that much, must be because it's a dungeon crawl mainly. No cities, no wilderness, no traveling, you live in the dungeon, you die in the dungeon.

Christopher: I'll just point out that though it is completely dungeon crawling there are special levels and a class based quest that liven it up, plus nethack is the most complicated roguelike in my opion. For example, hitting monster with corpses have various effects and who know what might happen if you read a cursed scroll of genocid when confused!

NeilStevens: Allow me to vent some frustration: Don't bother messing with noeGNUd unless you happpen to run the same exact OS as its author has. Its SDL rigging will only happen to work when SDL is installed in precisely the same place relative to system includes as it is on his system (regardless of sdl-config), you have to go manually patch the patches if you want to change that sdl-config, and it has odd undocumented dependencies that cause the build to fail. Unless I'm mistaken, it's using some glibc garbage. GNU is better than Microsoft at 'embrace and extend', I tell you what, tricking a bunch of hapless developers in to writing non-portable code without realizing.

CosmicGerbil: I *love* NetHack! I can't do it at all, but it's so addictive. I've got some 32 by 32 tiles for it, and they are so cute. I love the rope golem, the fire elemental, the stalker and the mindflayer.

ElvishPillager: I remember getting getting a pair of gloves and a Cockatrice corpse and hitting monsters with it. That was quite fun. I also remember a time when I didn't have any gloves and spent a while kicking a Cockatrice corpse to get it to somewhere where my pet wouldn't touch it by accient.

Remember... Unicorn horns are especially effective against killer bees. ;)
