Hi there! My usual online nickname is SinisterMinisterX, but I've had to use SinisterMinister because the final X screws up linking on this wiki. Ah well...
My ToME history:
I've been playing *bands sporadically since about 1997, and ToME occasionally since about 2002. Now (May 2006), after quite a long time away from ToME (haven't played since 2.0.0!), I'm back and greatly enjoying the changes in the game.
Scariest moment I've ever lived to tell about:
A Princess quest for 12 Nycadaemons on level 47 of Mordor. A potion of enlightenment tells me where the Princess room is. I'm charging towards it, and the Nycadaemons are charging towards me (through the walls, of course). We meet in a large open room. I had forgotten they could breathe nether; meeting them in the open was my first mistake. My second was failing to notice I had stepped out of my trap-detected zone. Half a dozen squares from 3 Nycadaemons, I step on a Trap of Drop Everything.
Equipment I dropped:
- Anduril
- Light Xbow of Extra Might
- Ring of Slaying (+13,+17)
- the Ring of Precognition
- the Phial of Galadriel
- Thalkettoth
- Hard Leather Cap of Seeing (my source of ESP!)
- Cammithrim
- Metal Shod Boots of Levitation
- a pick
Which means I was left wearing only:
- Amulet of the Serpents
- Colluin
- Celegorm
My inventory was also hit hard, but at least I got to keep my scrolls of teleportation. However, I dropped my potions of healing and was left with only CCWs. Even deadlier, I dropped my rod of trap detection. I can only pray I don't step on any more traps as I fight back.
Anduril dropped right next to me, so I was able to step there and pick it up. At least now I could hope to fight! Then one of the Nycadaemons summoned a group of Hezrous all around me, so I had to kill them to grab any more of my stuff. I manage to kill 4 of them on my next turn, but then a Nycadaemon breathes nether on me and reduces me to under 300 HP. I have to teleport away.
If I'd had all my equipment and inventory, I would have recalled out and fetched my ring of nether resistance from my home for this quest. But now, if I leave the level (which was an option, I still had my recall scrolls), then I lose all those artifacts. As I rest to heal, I find myself praying that Nycadaemons don't crush items when they step on them; that ring of slaying and especially the ESP cap are on my mind.
I start making my way back to the area. Without ESP, I have no idea where the demons are. Thank god I had the level enlightened; I can see the granite disappearing as they tunnel toward me. Once again, as soon as the first one gets me in LOS, he breathes nether and I have to teleport.
It's like a rerun: rest to heal, and start heading back. This time, as I see where the demons are tunneling, I manage to get them trapped against mountain chains. This time, I'm able to tease them out one at a time and use my Rohanknight lightspeed jump to get enough speed to kill them. After killing 5 like this, I finally get back to the room and get all my stuff.
Now knowing the dangers that Nycadaemons present, the rest of the quest goes reasonably easy.
Lessons learned:
Never ever ever ever ever step on a non-trap-detected square!!!
- When faced with a monster you haven't fought in several weeks, look it up on oook before running headlong into peril.
