The Ring of Flare
The mighty ring of the Thunderlord Flare that makes the wearer strong and healthy. It was once a ring of power and has been given to Flare by Celegorm when he arrived on Middle-earth with a full nest of Thunderlords.
It can be activated for dimension door every 100 turns if it is being worn. It grants you the power of swap position if it is being worn. It increases your strength, constitution, charisma and searching by 3. It provides immunity to fire. It allows you to fly. It allows you to see invisible monsters. It allows you to sense the presence of thunderlords. It cannot be harmed by acid, cold, lightning or fire.
If you've found this, some part of the RNG loves you. This is one of the best rings in the game! Especially for warriors, but all classes benefit.
- Point one: fire immunity, sought after but rarely acquired.
- Point two: fighter-based stat boosts, as well as charisma and searching, which most fighters lack.
- Point three: flight, allowing you the twin advantages of levitate and tree walking.
- Point four: dimension door, which works even on no-teleport levels such as Mt. Doom.
This is definitely an excellent ring that you should wear right now, if not sooner. In fact, in a_info it's noted that if its stat boosts were raised it may be more tempting than even *that* ring...

MayLith: This ring, while having all of the above wonderful attributes, is not necessarily a must-wear ring for all characters. (And btw, who says fire immunity is rarely acquired?!) Its primary usefulness for some characters is the dimension door attribute, used as a swap-out ring in places such as Mt. Doom.
MassimilianoMarangio: Fire immunity can only be found on 11 non-random artifacts (7 without counting cursed and ultimate items), but luckily there are enough random artifacts with this immunity.
MayLith: Heh. See the discussion between Neil and myself on my homepage:
- 'trueart' he doesn't like that term
- apparently randarts are eventually going away....
MassimilianoMarangio: Replaced "trueart".
TobiasParker: Until Yesterday i had never found Flare, when i *ID*d it i was really disappointed, everyone talked it up in their DiTL's but it isn't *that* good. Yes i am bored, lets start a flare discussion.
- Point one: fire immunity, i seem to find it first all the time.
- Point two: Strength, Con, CHR, and Searching +3...Not that good, i had to take off a randart ring that was STR, Searching +3, damage +16,
levitate, and had more resists. Maybe it would be more usefull to me with a random High resist as well.
- Point three: flight, isnt much better than levitate once you get into Mordor and Angband.
- Point four: dimension door/Swap Places. (this is really usefull with telepathy and a climbing set) the rings primary draw.
This is definately a good ring. But really the only reason to wear it is the Swap Places/Dimension door ability. By the time you find Flare you probably have Flying from something (Dragon Scale mail isnt that rare at high levels), for example i found flare at about Clevel40 on a Dracolich at Level 56 of Mordor. Lots of flying stuff, Fire immunity can be gained just by worshipping Melkor. Maybe i am just a stick in the mud, but if i wasnt busy killing Uniques looking for the other ring(!) i probably wouldnt even be wearing it.
NeilStevens: I think you underestimate a Con bonus, and the value of immunity in a ring slot. Yes, one usually finds fire immunity first, but Flare is a big reason for that, so you can't hold that against it!
EwanMcNay: As one of those who extols Flare, it's not usually the CON - there are other ways to get that - nor the ImmFire, which is again often duplicated. It's the swap position ability, one of the best abilities available as an artifact-granted power. I think it's actually *the* best ring for any non-sorceror class, basically.
FeathinSilyar: As I remember from when I used to play plain ToME (since Flare isn't in Theme and its descendents), I usually used Narya rather than Flare for fire immunity if I needed it from a ring, and used Flare as a swap. And +3 Con is nowhere near as useful as extra attacks or a heavy ring of slaying, and Nazgul rings with that in Con and other stats and better resistances are easy to come by.
NeilStevens: Narya is excellent, yes, but requires you to go through part of Angband to get. So in later versions, as Angband has gotten tougher and tougher, it becomes harder to come by.
