Rabbit Feet FAQ
Q - Where can you find rabbit feet? What are they good for?
Alchemists need them to make an artifact lucky. Otherwise they're useless except for meat, cannon fodder companions, and beastmaster quests. They're so hard to get that they deserve an entire FAQ!
Q - How do you get them rabbits?
You either find a forest/grass zone with all trees except a small area (high monster concentration) or grass with no trees at all (high visibility). Edge-scumming is superior to < and > scumming.
It's loooooong to find just one. Because this is a totally safe activity, some people think save-game cheating to get a rabbit to always drop a corpse is not really cheating - merely saving hours better spent playing the rest of the game.
In version 2.2.7 I've seen rabbits in the westmost part of Bree once - so pay attention each time you enter or leave towns... I haven't seen leveled rabbits in dungeon towns, though. I've once seen two rabbits at once in the wilderness square where entry to Orc Caves is, and one thereafter, without trying. This may be dumb luck, I will tell you if it's repeatable when I get artifact creation and go officially rabbit hunting...
Q - So you get only one left forefoot per corpse?
You can get 5 meat and still use the corpse; that's 6 left foot per rabbit! That's why the command to get those meats is a "hack"...
Q - Does the vorpal bunny count? Do rabbits multiply like... rabbits? Do summoned rabbits drop corpse? Can I wish for a rabbit corpse? Can I wish for a rabbit meat? Can I make a companion rabbit hit traps of growing to get more rabbit meat? Does the Robe of Great Luck attracts rabbits? If rats can multiply to make rock moles, can they multiply to make rabbits? What's up doc?
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and Bugs Bunny isn't a rabbit, hence the name!!
Q - But the robe of great luck should make me lucky and get rabbits!
Each rabbit is so lucky that Morgy's entire army couldn't get a single one for his ring! You'll eventually catch one anyways because you're gonna scum longer than Morgoth's entire army combined...
Q - How did the rabbit get so lucky anyway?
Some say that thought carries power and that belief in lucky rabbits made the rabbits lucky. But my guess is that because millenia of unlucky wabbits being hunted by supewstitious alchemists with gweater success than lucky wabbits, only the luckiest few suwvive. That's also why wabbits awe so wawe. -- Elmer Fudd
Q - Where can I get rabbit eggs?
No commercial gimmicks, please!
Q - So I need 75 rabbit parts to max-luck the average zombie yeek alchemist when he's wearing the Helm of Knowledge! That's still 13 corpses. Call me superstitious but I don't want to scum for such an unlucky number of corpses!
Silly rabbit. Scumming are for kids! And whoever plays ToME is a kid regardless of age.
Q - How can I get more rabbits than I hunt?
- You can't wish for a rabbit corpse or meat, but you can wish for a rabbit. The corpse drop isn't garanteed, so hunting is a better option even if you have more wishes than you can use. (Think: 99 magic essences per wish. 99 more for the empty staff of wish.)
You could use the Scroll of Deincarnation to get into a rabbit corpse, and then use symbiosis power to multiply yourself. But then you're a rabbit forever (and the HP isn't good since they're level ZERO)!
- The Long Sword of Angmar(?) is one that has the clone flag and low damage, I've heard. (I've never seen it!) Maybe one of the *thanc daggers can get the flag but you'll need to be a coward with plenty of damage reducing equipment. (Think cursed Rings of Damage.)
- You can polymorph other monsters into rabbits (takes many tries, but seems more likely to drop a corpse).
Q - What's the scumming record?
Zizzo has scummed for *70* rabbits to drop 60 corpses, so he could have an item of great luck! If this FAQ had existed at the time he'd know he only needs one corpse per 6 luck points... and besides, since +60 luck isn't always enough to max naturally unlucky characters, a higher scumming record might exist.
Q - What item should be made lucky?
Check out the First Artifact spoiler, it is extremely useful!
Q - Web links?
Uh... being too concerned with turning bunnies into murderous servants of Morgoth, killerbunnies didn't care at all for rabbits. But you might want to want to calculate how much corpse preservation helps. (Hint: make many beastmaster quests, and then just hunt a bit longer you'll save precious skill points. This isn't the I-need-70-rabbits era anymore.)
Q - Is there a rabbit Cthulhu/Angband/joke monster?
No, but there could be a joke group of 50 rabbits that are hardcoded to show up semi-frequently whenever the character is NOT an alchemist... with a funny description... this wasn't implemented yet.
Q - What is luck for, anyway?
Read the luck spoiler in the game, but if you don't think AC bonus and some other goodies like:
- It affects the chance of getting good, great, and artifact items.
- If you roll to get an artifact, the rarity roll is affected - and the rare artifacts you're waiting for to make more powerful artifacts are a must!
- It helps create better items with alchemy; the +7 luck bonus (for max luck) to item level also affects things you find.
- Other bonuses (melee I think?)
Q - What's the max item level for created, and found, and how does luck apply? (ignoring out-of-depth items, and items not created randomly such as the crown of Morgoth)
- Artifact in the bottom of Angband: hardcoded 10 + dungeon depth 99 + 7 for maxluck = 116
Artifact creation in the bottom of the Void: hardcoded 10 + dungeon depth 127 + 7 for maxluck = 144. (Yes, it's possible, you just need to find the Great Rod Tip of Home-Summoning to store piles of things. All you need is luck to find it. I still think creating artifacts in the Void is a bit silly, but it's nice to re-make wands...)
- Max alchemy skill, making something else than a stick, safely in town: skill50*2 + 7 for maxluck = 107
So yes, the bottom of Angband can give items that are about 8% better level on average. But that is only average and your items could be better anyhow if you just try 2 times or so in the safety of town with level 50 alchemy (except for sticks, where a deep dungeon is all you need)!
In fact you could make/find a Ring of Slaying (+17, +17) with a low level; it's just horribly unlikely.
See the Maxes Spoiler for more on what's the best bonus possible for each item. And remember that making a ring indestructible will reroll the accuracy, damage, and maybe AC (I didn't test AC).
Q - So to make a totally maxed supreme item such as a Ring of Slaying (+17, +17) -- this is the hardcoded max, which can't be improved by artifacting, so I want the maximum ego before I make it +speed too -- I need max luck?
No, but it helps a lot if you don't want to make 68 attempts to get it, losing 11 magic essences in the process... the statistics table is in object2.c if you want to look at it, as well as look at the hardcoded maximum of various ego items (and look carefully at double ego code there is a twist).
As for things you can add or boost with artifact creation later, there is no point in making hundreds of tries -- level it instead it's faster and there are no limits to pval (i.e. crown of Morgoth +125 to STR, INT, WIS, DEX, CON, CHA)!
