ToME Corruptions Spoiler
Contents
Introduction
Sometimes adventurers become exposed to the dark powers of Morgoth. If they are unable to resist these powers, they become corrupted. Corruptions can change their physical and/or mental abilities. These changes may be good or bad. Most corruptions will affect you at all times, though some only operate when they are activated -- either by your choice or as a random event.
You can check which corruption(s) your character has, if any, via the following key sequence:
- type '~' (access current knowledge menu)
- type '6' (display corruptions)
Creating a character dump will also list your character's current corruptions.
Gaining and (not) losing corruptions
You can become corrupted by:
- quaffing a Potion of Corruption
- drinking directly from a Fountain of Corruption
- activating some strange items
Corruptions are permanent. Once you have a corruption, nothing can remove it.
Balrog Corruptions
Balrog Aura
- Surrounds you with a fiery aura, but it can burn scrolls when you read them.
- Gain message: A corrupted wall of flames surrounds you.
Balrog Wings
- Creates ugly, but working, wings allowing you to fly, but it reduces charisma by 4 and dexterity by 2.
- Gain message: Wings of shadow grow in your back.
Balrog Strength
- Provides 3 strength and 1 constitution, but it reduces charisma by 1 and dexterity by 3.
- Gain message: Your muscles get unnatural strength.
Balrog Form
- Allows you to turn into a Balrog at will.
- Gain message: You feel the might of a Balrog inside you.
It depends on:
- Balrog Aura
- Balrog Wings
- Balrog Strength
Demon Corruptions
Demon Spirit
- Increases your intelligence by 1, but reduce your charisma by 2.
- Gain message: Your spirit opens to corrupted thoughts.
Demon Hide
- Increases your armour class by your level. Provides also immunity to fire at level 40, but reduces speed by your character level / 7.
- Gain message: Your skin grows into a thick hide.
Demon Breath
- Provides fire breath, but gives a small chance to spoil potions when you quaff them.
- Gain message: Your breath becomes mephitic.
Demon Realm
- Provides access to the Demon School of magic and the full use of demonic equipment.
- Gain message: You feel more attuned to the demon realm.
You must already have these corruptions to have a chance at gaining Demon Realm:
- Demon Spirit
- Demon Hide
- Demon Breath
Teleportation Corruptions
Random teleportation
- Randomly teleports you around.
- Gain message: Space seems to fizzle around you.
If you have the Random teleportation corruption, you cannot gain the Anti-teleportation corruption.
Anti-teleportation
- Prevents all teleportations, be it of you or monsters.
- Gain message: Space continuum freezes around you.
If you have the Anti-teleportation corruption, you cannot gain the Random corruption.
Can be toggled through the powers menu, at the expense of mana.
Troll Corruptions
Troll Blood
- Troll blood flows in your veins, granting increased regeneration. It also enables you to feel the presence of other troll beings, but it will make your presence more noticeable and aggravating.
- Gain message: Your blood thickens, you sense corruption in it.
Vampire Corruptions
Vampire corruptions only become available if you select the Vampire race modifier during character creation.
- Vampire corruptions cannot be gained by quaffing Potions of Corruption.
Vampiric Teeth
- Your teeth allow you to drain blood to feed yourself, however your stomach now only accepts blood.
- Gain message: You grow vampiric teeth!
Vampiric Strength
- Your body seems somewhat dead. In this near undead state it has improved strength, constitution and intelligence, but reduced dexterity, wisdom and charisma.
- Gain message: Your body seems more dead than alive.
You must already have the Vampire Teeth corruption to have a chance at gaining this corruption.
Vampire
- You are a Vampire. As such you resist cold, poison, darkness and nether. Your life is sustained, but you cannot stand the light of the sun.
- Gain message: You die to be reborn in a Vampire form.
You must already have the Vampire Strength corruption to have a chance at gaining this corruption.
Code aspects

(temporary) Chatter
MayLith: Several things:
- I modified the third paragraph in the "Gaining and (not) losing corruptions" section. I'm pretty sure random teleportation/antiteleportation cancel one another out. (If this is true, then the individual entries for those corruptions will also need to be edited.
- When a corruption depends upon another (such as vampire strength depending on vampire teeth), that means that you have to have the first corruption before you can have a chance at getting the latter one, right? If so, then this page needs rewording in the relevant parts, because it's a bit unclear at the moment.
- Why are there top and bottom anchors on this page?
- Yes that's right.
- Yes that's right too, I think DG wrote the original docs for corruptions.
- So that the up/down arrows actually do something?
MassimilianoMarangio: 3. That's correct.
ReenenLaurie: To my knowledge the teleport/anti teleport corruptions CANNOT cancel each other... you can't gain the other if you have the other one.
MassimilianoMarangio: This is also true. You can test it in debug mode by using ^A M to gain corruptions.
MayLith: Thanks all. (Doh! about the anchors.) Assorted fixes made. One more Q, though: Why does Demon Realm require just all three base demon corruptions, whereas with Vampire, you have to gain the base corruptions in a certain order?
MassimilianoMarangio: It was intended to remove the vampire race modifier and to gain the vampiric corruptions as a side effect of vampire attacks, but this idea was dropped. In the actual version, you can only obtain the vampiric corruptions by starting with the vampire race modifier.
MayLith: /me peers. Hmm. I didn't realize that was still available. Some digging reveals the reason for my confusion: Wood elves don't get the option of that race modifier.
Editing throughout (see diff) for clarity and assorted comments added.
Side note: The in-game spoiler file is automatically created by the Lua function corruption_spoiler_generate() in core/crpt_aux.lua.
LogrusMage: So the vampire contagion idea has been dropped altogether? I'd figured it was just still in the works.
NeilStevens: It was added, and removed at my request. Corruptions are so bad they can be game wrecking, I don't think it's fair to make it possible to get them accidentally. I say one unlucky vampire bite shouldn't mean instant death if you get trapped in daylight with no means to travel back to town.
Solorin: Are the corruptions different in Theme? I'm playing version 1.1.3 and I get a whole lotta other funky stuff i.e. 'Smell Monsters' - this works like Sense Monsters, 'Shriek' - does some level of sound damage in a certain radius.
Mr. Stevens, insta-death by vampire bite would add an interesting dimension of realism though wouldn't it? It would make vampires a little trickier to contend with.
NerdanelVampire: Just to be pedantic, it would take three unlucky bites to become a vampire. In general, vampirism is a lot nicer than balrog aura or demon breath or the dreaded troll blood. The only big potential problem would be getting vampirism while having no light resistance and after walking to/running out of recall in a dungeon that is farther than one night's travel from a town with no waystation dungeon to spend the day in. Even that is not hopeless, since in a dungeon a source of light resistance will eventually be generated and vampires don't starve easily with living monsters around.
RukeIceling: Is the Anti-Teleportation corruption supposed to be toggle-able? When I gained it, it gave me a power under my powers list that allows me to toggle it on and off. I didn't edit the text of that message yet, but it should probably be noted if this is intentional.
RukeIceling: Ok, did some experimentation, and Anti-Teleportation always allows you to toggle it on/off, but when you allow teleportation to happen it costs some mana to turn it on, and slowly drains while you controll your corruption, only allowing mana to return when teleportation is turned off.
