Angband

This is it, the one and only, and if you chose 98 quests upon character creation, this is where you'll pay for it. In spades.

Getting there

Angband is due north of Bree, 16 steps through Overland travel if you have mountain climbing, a few more if you don't, as you'll have to detour around the mountains surrounding the Orc Cave. You must be at least 30th level to enter Angband.

Wilderness level

The wilderness level of Angband is frequented by dragons (baby, young and mature; I've never seen an Ancient there) as well as other monsters of similar level. You may also encounter one of the Windlords there. Windlords are tremendously chatty co-aligned monsters.

Angband and recalling

You can recall out and back in to Angband, but you cannot teleport into it via Thunderlord's Guild or reset recall to it.

If your recall destination has been set to a dungeon other than Angband, you need to do one of two things:

You enter (from wilderness) the first level of Angband (67 / 3350') and...

  1. ...hoof it all the way back down again.
  2. ...cast recall (scroll, rod or spell) and answer 'no' at the prompt "Do you wish to reset recall to this level? (y/n)". Wait until it yanks you to the surface, and then recall back to the depth you were at previously.

The dungeon

Physically, the dungeon is fairly typical -- rectangular rooms with 1-square-wide corridors. The walls are granite. There are no mountains. Single (frequently nasty) traps, and single fountains.

You can genocide in Angband, but as usual, let the user beware.

The monsters

All monsters in Angband are levelled. This means that every monster you encounter will be far tougher than any of its brethren that you might have previously encountered elsewhere, just as on a God quest, but Angband is deeper than any God quest. The list of monsters includes summoners, breeders, powerful melee-ers, and groups of breathers. To add insult to injury, you will not receive a commensurately increased number of experience points by killing them. A few more XP, yes, but only an insignificant number.

Things you will need in Angband

Special Levels

There are three. They are one-time, no-teleport levels.

  1. The Crypt, at DL 70.

  2. The Dimensional Gates, aka DimGates, at DL 85.

  3. Nameless, at DL 95.

If you requested lots of random quests at character creation, you may get a Princess or FF quest proclamation when you enter one of these levels. The Princess room will not until you leave the level and then come back again. FF quests can occur, though! This means that if you have a FF quest for, say, 20 Great Storm Wyrms on DL 70, you will have to contend with those monsters as well as those normally found in The Crypt.

General Advice

It would be a good idea to have your character maxxed out, or nearly so, before attempting this dungeon. If you can't take out an Ancient Dragon with one or two spells or blows, you might want to think again.

Excessive sightseeing is a good way to get yourself dead in Angband. Be cautious and paranoid, get the job done, and move on. A vault with OOD monsters in a dungeon where the monsters are already levelled? Maybe not...

If you have the Anchor of Space-Time (or even an Amulet of Anti-Teleportation, a very weak second-best), bring it along by all means, even if you carry it as a swap.
