Erebor, the Lonely Mountain
Erebor is located northeast of Mirkwood forest and north of the land of Rhun, at the source of the River Running. Its name literally means "lonely mountain".
It is equivalent to dungeon levels 60 to 72.
Terrain: Naturally, everything is dragon-sized. The main level is mountains and chasms, run through with corridors and large, odd-sized rooms. Corridors are two squares wide, the granite walls of the the rooms are two squares thick, and doors, stairs, void jumpgates and traps and fountains occur in groups of four.
This is the perfect place for fountains, as the level is deep enough for rare and valuble potions to be procured from them. Each set of four fountains will contain the same potion.
Monsters: Erebor is full of dragons, though not exclusively so. There are Qs, druj, and a mix of random types including summoners.
Boss: Erebor is guarded by Glaurung, Father of Dragons. He will drop at least one randart along with several other high-value items. Glaurung's corpse is sometimes valued as a body for Possessors.
Special aspects: You cannot thunderlord into this dungeon. Recall does work, though.
If you want to scum somewhere and are not quite ready for the dangers of deep Angband, Erebor is your place. The wyrms are plentiful there and drop lots of items.
Prepare against being breathed on by practically any dragon, and keep all of your resistances covered.
Sooner or later (probably sooner) something will summon Ancient Dragons all around you. The best way to avoid this is to hug the wall and use mountain climbing if you have it.
Discussion
MayLith: I just finished Erebor for the first time. I noticed a *lot* of Rings of Critical Hits and Rings of Woe, for some reason -- probably it was just the right dungeon level range for their creation. There were also a number of Lesser Black Reavers.
BurbLulls: My observations of this dungeon; it is perfectly possible to get the valued ring of Flare here, so have a go. Also, the first wyrm enemys that will probably appear are great wyrms of perplexity, followed closed by great wyrms of thunder, then the basic element wyrms, then others.
SeanOSe: I'm sure this is obvious to everyone but me, but how does one go beyond the first level? "Ask at Dale" doesn't mean anything to me. I think Dale is Esgaroth, but there's no one to ask there. Sigh.
NerdanelVampire: You must be playing Theme. Erebor is different there. You need to have the map and key of Thorin in order to enter. Those items can be found inside the house quests in Bree and Minas Anor. I hope you picked them up.
SeanOSe: I am indeed doing Theme. I think I got the map of Thorin from Bilbo's Trail...I don't recall finding anything in the Minas Anor quest. I wonder, if I got it and sold it, if it will stay in a shop, and if it's worth trying to find where I sold it. Sigh. One lives and learns, or dies and tries again. I'll just have to scum the first couple of levels of Angband. Thanks!
