Getting there
Mirkwood the dungeon resides at the west edge of the Mirkwood Forest. If you leave from Lothlorien and travel northeast you will find the forest easily; it is very large. Follow the edge of the forest on the wilderness map northwards until you see a purple '>'.
Physical aspects
The "walls" in Mirkwood are trees, which means flight or treewalking is very handy in this dungeon, although Wood-Elves and Ents would probably be the only races with treewalking at this stage of the game.
Flying monsters, such as dragons, are more formidable than usual, as they can pass through the trees as well.
Additionally, the inner edges of rooms are lined by small trees which you and the monsters can pass through but which disrupt the line of sight. This slightly favors melee over distance attacks, since the common general-purpose strategy of fighting in a corner next to a wall may allow a melee-only monster get the first hit on a distance-attack-preferring character.
Beware also of lines of small trees which hide behind them another room. Monsters may charge through such edges without warning.
The trees can be cleared with a simple shovel, so no vault is hard to get into; but a pit full of dragons can fly straight at you from quite a distance. Having a dragon-slaying weapon or a stack of teleport scrolls can help you cope with such an encounter.
On level 25 of Mirkwood, there is a "passage leading into the very heart of the world." This down staircase will take you to Level 25 of the HeartOfTheEarth
