Fate
Numerous spirits inhabit the land of Arda, from the murderous barrow wights to the enigmatic Tom Bombadil. These spirits usually are bound to a specific geographic region, but there are exceptions to this rule. Sometimes one of these spirits will anonymously take interest in an adventurer. This can either be very, very good or very, very bad. These spirits will "rig" reality to ensure that something happens -- or doesn't happen.
In order to attract the attention of a spirit, the adventurer must be somewhat experienced, having attained at least the 11th level of experience. Every 10 game turns, which corresponds to 1 normal speed player turn, there is a 1 in 50,000 chance of gaining a fate.
When you gain a fate, the chance for a specific fate breaks down as follows:
Chance |
Fate |
7/18 |
find a specific mundane item on a specific dungeon level |
7/18 |
meet a malicious monster to do battle on a specific dungeon level |
1/9 |
find an artifact on a specific dungeon level |
1/18 |
meet your demise on a specific dungeon level (which see below) |
1/18 |
become invulnerable to attacks from mortals |
Whenever a level is being chosen for a fate, it is always chosen within 20 levels of your current recall depth. Items, monsters, and artifacts are all generated up to 10 levels out of depth for your current recall depth.
Death fates
Being fated to meet your demise on a specific dungeon level is known as a /Death fate.

Chatter
Sly: I think that luck affect the gaining of Death fate and Invulnerable to martals. If you are unlucky you gain only get Death fates, not Invulnerable to mortals, and reverse if you are lucky
TimmyBravo: Actually, that's not quite correct. Having checked the source, it appears that if you are lucky (as in luck greater than zero), you can't get the death fate. However, being unlucky (luck is zero or negative) does not prevent you from getting the "never to die by the hand of a mortal" fate.
Torrenal: Apologies for peeking at source (peeking at Tome 2.3.3). Feel free to remove any bits that are too spoily (Hmm.. these are spoilers...): While unlucky (luck 0 or less), you have 17 chances slots for the fates, the invulnerable fate is ommitted. When lucky (luck 1 or more) the 18th slot is opened up for invulnerable, but it has what appears to be a depth based restriction... if I read it correctly: 1% for every 4 levels current depth, capping at 50%). If the restriction is not cleared, you get fated to find an object instead (I may be in error about which depth, may be recall, but as I read it 'current' seems correct (& sensible)). Luck plays no other role in choosing what fate than deciding if the invulnerable fate is possible or not. It does not affect the odds of obtaining a specific fate over another fate, and does not affect the Death fate (still possible when lucky). Also: Precognition appears to tell you about a death or invulnerable fate at the time you receive it (I think you still may need to ID it at the seer to get it on your fates list, the source is a touch funny here.).
BucketMan: So, if I understand you correctly, with a luck of 1, simply by sitting and waiting on level 100 of Angband I get a 25% chance to receive the invulnerable fate every time a fate is awarded? Or...is that a 25% that the 18th fate is even possible, and if I roll within the 25%, I still have only a one in 18 chance of actually receiving it?
Torrenal: 1/4 if that slot is hit, or 0.25 in 18, or about a 1.39% chance per fate awarded. So figure.... (does more math....) 50 fates at that depth for a 50.3% chance at gaining the 'never to die by a mortal hand' fate. (Immortals, I regret, can still lay you on your backside if improperly addressed).
LaLuneEtMoi: Of course, that's something like a 1 in 3.6 million chance of being awarded that fate on any given turn at that level, so bring a snack.
Torrenal: Grr... that's what I get for perusing a source window before closing it...I notice my mistakes and start kicking myself for it. In correction to my previous statements, the luck fate is always open, it's the death fate that is closed off if luck is > 1. (Death fate is #17, lucky fate is #0. Rolls 0-16 if lucky, 0-17 otherwise) Apologies for any confusion.
