The Quest
Goal: Your goal is simply to reach the exit staircase, which lies in the southeast corner of a fairly small quest level. You do not have to kill anything. (Actually you might need to kill one troll to open space for walking around the others.)
Monsters: Buckets and buckets of trolls, arrayed in a diagonal grid. There are spaces in-between each troll. The worst of the lot are a number of Hrus which are toward the center of the level. Ulik the Troll is also found on this level, and some Ancient Green Dragons. You may think more trolls are being summoned, but they are not; there's simply a lot of them there.
Tactics:
- Stealth: Characters with very high stealth can simply tiptoe through without waking up anything.
- Mayhem: Serious mayhem is required to get through this quest on brute force.
- Magic: Many people speak well of Wands of Tidal Wave for this quest. Junkarts of Genocide are helpful to eradicate the Hrus.
- Cheese: Use the Recall spell or Flare's activation to swap places with a monster near the stairs, and walk right up them.
The reward for your success: You get access to the Expensive Jewelry Store in Gondolin, which appears to the left of the entrance to the Mayor's office.You also obtain 200000 gold pieces if at least 2/3 of the monsters are killed.
Class-specific tactics
- Missile-using characters: Use exploding ammos of Gravity to blast a clear pathway through. I just did this quest with an Archer. I was missing a Genocide junkart to cope with the Hrus. I *wanted* to try to kill all the monsters, but it just didn't work out that way, and the exploding Gravity arrows I happened to have got me through it very, very easily.
Paladins: Of course mayhem-style: PeterWiersig/Meiseth; all bonus giving spells from both tomes Tulkas Prayer skill gives access to and something to keep yourself from getting surrounded
- Possessors: Use a confusion breathing body, a Mature Bronze Dragon will do. Stay in the starting corner and spam away. The entire level can be cleared with ease.
- People with high mindcraft skill: (or maybe charm spell) Use the domination spell to charm most of the monsters to fight against each other and then dismiss them at the end. Works great if you just want to charm the Hru's to kill each other then dismiss them.
- Thaumaturgists: View spells until the trolls are dead, which should be enough to get the reward. If you have chaos spells, they're very useful - they can polymorph the Hrus.
Chatter
Dkarrde -- I killed every single monster, from the War Trolls to the Hrus to the unique Troll boss (pure melee, no charming or genociding) and did not receive the mentioned 200000 gold reward, only access to the jewelry shop.
Addendum: On my second try, I did get the gold, strangely enough. Seems to be a bit buggy.
