"An Old Mages Quest!" Retrieve the strange essence for the old mage in Lothlorien.

Overview

In the northwestern portion of Lothlorien, (Sector 0,0) there's an Old Mage in one of the houses who offers a quest. The entrance is quite close to where you get the quest. It is a small (44x44), open, teleport-blocked level horizontally bisected by a river of shallow- and deep-lava. On the far side are 'things that like fire'. Once you've waded through the lava you can get the random essence marked {quest} that will be there and return to the exit. Through the lava.

Monsters

The number appearing is approximate - and probably random.

Special Notes

• You must cross at least three squares of shallow and/or deep lava, twice.
• There are quite a few traps.
• Have something worth fireproofing when you collect.

Tactics

A ranged attack means you can fight individual monsters at the limit if your field of view. If you're relying on melee, you have to cross the lava while up to around 6 breath attacks are aimed in your general direction.

• Stealth is helpful for keeping the monsters quiet until you're ready to deal with them. So, naturally, is wall creation, though if you have it, you've probably waited a bit late to take this quest...

A ring of fire will not only give you double resistance (when activated), but may remove lava squares if you target the river.

Reward

Old Mage says: Great! Let me fireproof some of your items in thanks. I can do 3 books, 4 staves, or 12 scrolls.

You can mix and match things, and you can leave and come back with something you really want fireproofed.

Chatter

I think he offers 12 "units" of fireproofing, with a book taking 4 units, a staff 3 units, and a scroll 1 unit. -Rolan
shoob: or you can take them all out with major displacement!!! That is probably a bug. it somehow hurts all the monsters in view, so just wander around casting it, and soon everyone is dead but you.
