Quest Location

The location is one of the four shallow water squares nortwest of Lothlorien. Which of the four, is determined randomly.

Quest Monsters

There are a large number of molds, eyes, and mimics, all levelled. The monsters are all bunched up together on a circular patch of tainted water. Most of the monsters cannot move, but there are a few shambling mounds and spectators in the mix, as well as blinking magic mushroom patches. Various mimics with their distance spells are the most dangerous monsters. Shrieker mushroom patches turn your pets against you.

On the level there are also a few normal shallow water monsters. These you can ignore unless they attack you.

Completing the Quest

Kill all the monsters except the ones that normally inhabit shallow water. Then drop on the ground any number of the potions Celeborn gave you to purify the water. The reward for the quest is an Elven blue dragon scale mail.

Tips

The Poisoned Water quest can be very easy for caster types and horrible for melee fighters. Any type that relies on melee is strongly recommended to use magic device or archery for this quest. However, a large number of wand charges or arrows is needed since there are many monsters and they have many hitpoints. In case the stores of these prove to be insufficient, the mimics are the thing that should at the very least be killed from distance. In general, area effect spells like Noxious Cloud are to be preferred.

Genociding "m", "," and "e" will kill all the monsters allowing easy completion of the quest.

You can leave the quest any time and come back with no other penalty but that you have to start the quest all over again.

Anonymous: Is it just me or does this quest have to be done at night? I searched all four of the shallow water squares and never ran into any of the groups during the day, so I went back and rested in town until nightfall and then when I went back I found them. Oddly enough none of them were actually in the water this time and there was just one brown water square nearby that needed to be cleaned up.

NeilStevens: No, the quest does not have to be done at night.

Anonymous2: I just finished the quest in 2.3.1, and I received "Elven Blue D... [30,+20] (+3)" with Resist: acid, fire, cold, electricity, poison, and confusion. +Flying and ESP.Orcs. None of that is 'Resist Light'.

blahpers: Indeed, I just finished it in 2.3.3 and got chaos resistance instead of light. Consider it corrected.
