The small town of Bree has had problems with thieves robbing people lately. The Mayor sets you on a quest to rid the town of the ruffians. This is a short quest that an experienced player can complete at clvl 1 with any character.

The quest starts when you enter the yellow '>' on the house in the middle of town. Upon entering the character appears in a locked room without his equipment. You can unpick the lock, and will be in a corridor. The last door down the corridor has you equipment on the floor. If you follow the path again past an open area you will find another door. Once this door is opened it aggravates all the monsters on the level, there is nothing you can do about that. Past the door are 5 novice rogues, one novice mage, one novice warrior and one bandit in small rooms. There is a guaranteed {good} dagger in the bandit's room (the second from the left in the top row) which the bandit may pick up. There is a second door, behind which is two more novice warriors. Once you have defeated all ten monsters a stairway appears in the bottom left of the map for you to leave by.

Tactics

A good tactic for those who do attempt this quest at clvl 1 is to set your tactics to running/berserker so that you can 'hack and back' the monsters with your extra speed to kill them. Let them follow you into the corridor where they cannot surround you. and after hitting one, move back a space so that it will not hit you as often. This is more difficult for mages, but still doable with your starting dagger. After hitting a monster, if it is not dead or close to dead, you might want to back one space so that it will hit you less often.

It is possible that the monsters will damage you so much that you will need to flee to the north. In this case, if you hide at the east side of the room where you found your stuff, the monsters often will not be able to reach you. After you heal, then you can approach the door and the monsters chasing you will move west and open the door.

If a novice rogue "flees laughing" then it might have teleported to the north. In this case, you might immediately want to hunt it down, so that if later you need to flee in that direction, your path will be open.
