The ability to recall out of dungeons instantly will save your life frequently. (However, the monsters can still react in this last turn.)
Frequent use of the lightning bolt ability is nice, but won't be as good as some powerful wands. Thunderlords have a magic device bonus of zero so don't expect to use the best activations with great success(zero failure is not possible with most wands anyway).
Lightning bolt damage: fire_beam(GF_ELEC, dir, p_ptr->lev * 2); fire_beam(GF_SOUND, dir, p_ptr->lev * 2);
In 2.2.7 or 2.3 sticks become only linked to magic device skill; so that thunderlords are equal to everyone in this respect from now on.
The straight road is useful early in the game. But later there is a ring that makes jump gates. (-;
Being a slow leveler will save you from doing the nasty quest at level 45 before you're ready.
- Actually, you can accept this quest but not do it immediately. If it is accepted, it can be left as long as the player wishes without Gondolin being destroyed.
Since alchemists need to gain more XP for items than it takes to make a thunderlord level 50, you might as well play a thunderlord alchemist.
Their great flaw is lack of stealth. Alchemist thunderlords can make artifacts of stealth in the late game to fix that.
Chatter
FeathinSilyar: That comment up there about a ring that makes jump gates...I'm assuming it is talking about Flare, or am I clueless about some other ring? Looks like a bit of a typo, since Flare by no means makes jump gates.
AgEnt: Hmmm, it activates for "dimension door", which seems to act like a high-level minor displacement, i.e. it makes a jump gate to wherever you want, but doesn't toss you through it.
