Runes are used for Runecraft. Unlike essences, they can be sold for varying amounts of gold.
Where to find Runes
Mostly, I've found runes at various dungeon levels. They also sometimes show up in the Black Market.
Types of Runes
- There are two types of runes, one orange (targeting) and the other magenta (effect). Any given spell may have any number of targeting runes incorporated, but only one effect.
Targeting Runes
- Self
- Spell targets yourself
- Arrow
- Spell goes in the direction specified until it hits something.
- Ray
- Spell goes in the specified direction, affecting everything along the way.
- Sphere
- Spell affects an area of given radius (smaller than armageddon) around the player.
- Armageddon
- Spell affects everything within a given radius (how big?)
Effect Runes
- Acid
- (untried) Spell does acid damage
- Chaos
- Chaos damage, additional effects include life-draining, confusion and monster polymorph. Useful when fighting powerful enemies.
- Cold
- (untried) Spell does cold damage
- Fire
- Spell does fire damage.
- Holding
- Spell paralyzes
- Knowledge
- Shows target hitpoints or acts as self-knowlage.
- Life
- Spell heals
- Lightning
- (untried) Spell does lightning damage
Combinations
Some combinations are obvious. If you use a Self-Acid spell, you shoot yourself with an acid bolt. If you use a Self-Holding spell, you paralyze yourself. If you use either in combination with an arrow rune instead of a Self one, you do it to your target.
- Self-Knowledge
- Acts as self-knowledge spell.
- Self-Life
- Heals yourself.
- Self-Mind
- Gives you ESP (you can sense monsters).
