Spectre

Another powerful undead creature: the spectre is a ghastly apparition, surrounded by an unearthly glow. They exist only partially on our plane of existence: half-corporeal, they can pass through walls, though this requires a sacrifice of some of their life-force. As a result they cannot rest whilst passing through a wall.

As undead, they have a firm hold on their life force, see invisible, and resist poison and cold. They also resist nether. Spectres make superb spellcasters, but their physical form is very weak. Like Zombies, Spectres gain almost no nutrition from ordinary food.

Discussion

Spectres have inherent +5% mana.

They're annoying for losing some HP when accidentally passing thru obstacles. However passing through walls has obvious advantages in fleeing certain doom.

They're the world champions of the "hide, use potions, go back to battle prepared" or the "use attack wands, hide, heal, repeat" tactic.

They have -3 to luck.

Spectres also make for really cheesy Summoners / Symbiants. Summon an army of pets, and wait safely inside a wall while they take care of business, only coming out of hiding when the battle's over (or to summon reinforcements or deliver the finishing blow to uniques and quest monsters.) This also makes bearable the bug which sometimes causes an enemy summoner's spell aimed at your allies to summon monsters around "you". Of course you still have to be careful of spirits, tunnelers, shatterers(FF quests for Hrus are a major pain), and desintegration breathers (careful with those GWoPs!)

One piece of advice for waiting/resting inside walls: bring a wand of dig or a good digger with you if you don't want to come out with 1HP!
