Introduction

Hey there all! New to WIKI, but long time *band player. Haven't really played Pern/TOME all that seriously until recently though. MayLith's competition seemed like a good jumping off point for my participation here. Let me know if I mess up this posting any.

Vauv is my first character for the comp, surprisingly still alive. :) A Elven Ranger is kinda boring, but a good one for a newer TOME player to get for this competition. Currently hanging out one level about the dreaded Ochre Jelly level in the Barrow-Downs, looking for a magical bow/and or missiles to help take them out.

QUESTS:

BD1: Princess, 5 Green Jelly. Ack tough one to start out with, and I HATE Jellies. Luckily one of the three boomerangs I stumbled on to on the level, turned out to be magical, though I didn't know that until I could ID it later. Took out the Jellies with relative ease. Was Level 6 after them which was sweet indeed. Took a scimitar which turned out to be a scimitar of *Slay* Giants. Did the Bree house quest after that to get to Level 7.

BD2: Princess, 11 Novice Rogues. Easy as pie other than the princess being surrounded by lava. Was able to find a short path through it to get my reward from a choice of an axe, lance, or hammer. Went with the axe, thinking it would weigh the less of the three with my lowish STR. Got a nice Fiery Battle Axe (+4, +5), which Vauv still uses to this day. Maybe should have kept the scimitar looking back thanks to the +2 STR bonus with it, but the axe does more damage.

BD3: Princess, 11 Crypt Creep. A tough chore here, made a little easier in that some were trapped by the lava surrounding the princess. Got 2 levels from them, then chose Scale Mail instead of arrows and a boomerang. Turned out to be Elvish Leather Scale Male (+11, +12), which was certainly worth the extra weight.

BD4: FF, 17 Red Jelly. Did I tell you how much I hate Jellies? Had to retreat from there to go get my boomerang. Was greeted by Smeagol upon my return. A potion of speed, berserk STR, and my trusty axe combined to take him down fairly easily. Used the Ring of Invis he dropped (he also dropped a quarterstaff of slay dragon, which I sold) to do Farmer Maggot's quest. Figured I could use his Sling to take out the Jellies. Boomerang lasted for just 2 jelly kills, which then began a long process of slinging them, and then stepping in with axe when I figured I could take them out with one shot. Only lost 1 STR point this way, so it worked out pretty well. Took Archery from FF's choices over Thaumaturgy and Necromancy.

BD5: FF, 20 Skeleton human. These were surprisingly tougher than expected. But found a wand of noxious cloud on the level, which would certainly be helpful later. Took Divination over Conveyance and Anti-magic. Been using the Book of Beginner Cantrips for Phase Door, Detect Monsters, and later on Sense Hidden.

BD6: FF, 17 Dark Elven Priests. GASP. Knew these guys would be rough, had a couple close calls which forced me to retreat a level, but then I realized the wand of Noxious Cloud wand had a damage over time effect-found this out by using it on Bullroarer, one shot from the wand, one shot from the crossbow finished him. Easiest I ever took him out. Sadly he dropped several weapons, but no special ones, and no missile ones. I also found a Blue Firebird Egg, which hatched on the level above the priests, but was still helpful before dying a couple levels down. Wand/crossbow took out the priests a bit easier now that I knew the full power of the wand. Took archery from FF's choices of spirituality, symbiosis, and thaumaturgy.

BD7: FF (enough with FF already!), 18 Ochre Jelly. Retreat! Knew I wouldn't be able to take them on without a better bow/missiles, or some kind of magic item that would affect jellies and in a big way. Currently searching for just such a thing. Picked up some manathrust wands in town that helped tremendously. Still took a lot of damage to equipment though. Took two shots to kill one off, until I levelled midquest and could then take them out with one shot. Met and finished off Mughash and friends on this level too. FF offered Combat, Conveyance, Spirituality, and Symbiosis. Took Conveyance

BD8: Princess (yeah!) 11 Hairy Molds. Nothing difficult about these guys other than the fact that they and the princess were surrounded by lava. Princess gave a choice of Bolts, Dagger, or War Hammer. The Dagger and War Hammer could have been artifacts for all I know, but the chance to get some magical missiles was too good to pass up. Turned out to be 24 Bolts of Wounding (+7, +9), so I was happy with my choice.

BD9: FF 13 Imps. One Imp or something invisible was in LOS right from the stairs. Teleported me to it, and wailed on me. Tried phase dooring, but he or another Imp was in LOS there. DEAD.

Chatter

This was a fun way to get used to TOME. I'll likely start another character for the comp just because I only had one char under it, and want to see what other wild combos I can get. :)
