A complete ToME noob!

Me

My name is Roger, I'm a network engineer, junior-varsity programmer (ok.. intramural), and sometime voice actor.

The day I found Nethack my life changed... for the worse according to my friends, all but one of whom just don't get the appeal of roguelikes. Silly them. I played nethack a LOT but never came close to ascending, sure - the Devteam had thought of - everything - but after reading a few YAAPs, things just all kind of blurred... everyone had dragon-scale armor and one of just a few artifact weapons. meh. At endgame, things just started seeming too similar. ICKY.

Then I found ADoM... "Here! My prayers to the RNGs have been answered! A game where things AREN'T the same everywhere! Wewt!" But no... such was not the case. I found a couple of things that I wanted changed, and could have, even to a programmer of my limited abilities. *sigh* Closed-source freeware bugs me. It smacks of control-freakdom and 'I'm ashamed of my code'ed-ness.

Off again, I was. I had a brief stint with Diablo I and II + associated expansions, they were fun, but I never could catch the same level of intensity from them. I even tried World of Warcraft (ever notice that Blizzard is in the market of making two products: RTS's and Rogue-likes.)

Then, on a whim... I looked at Angband. Oooo! Pretty! Me like pretty! Middle Earth! Spiffy! I took a couple of looks at the sites, thought ZAngband would be more my tastes and then stumbled across ToME. Ahhh... it should be renamed HoME (Hell on Middle Earth, anyone?), because that's where I feel like I've settled. Then, I found FuryMod and ecstacy was truly mine! I get all the yumminess of ToME, the extra-goodiness of Theme and all the wacky monsters from ZAngband!? Wow.

So, there you have it... a story similar to many others, but it's mine and trips down memory lane are fun.

• Note - Triping down memory lane hurts the knees, always remember where the rough spots in the road are.

Characters

My characters are here on oook. I haven't died (yet) with that 'toon! Game trivia about me:

• Favorite race: Dunno yet, RohanKnights are coming across as a bit 'easy'.

• Favorite classes: Warrior types... so far. I haven't tried any mage-ish ones yet.

• Favorite god: Tulkas - Critical hits whenever I want them!? What's not to love?

• Wins: Pish! If I wanted to 'win', I wouldn't be playing Rogue-likes.

• Best character: (FuryMod) Vanity - Level 25-ish RohanKnight Swordmaster - Kickin' waaay too much buttocks.

• Favorite finds: Sentient Lightsabers. Riding down dungeon corridors with a glowing sword'o'death is FUN!
• Game habits:
  • Slow diving, due to:
    • stupidity
    • fear
    • always hitting 'l' and saying "Cooool!"
  • Whack it 'till it bleeds to death. Gore is your friend!
• Stupidest death: "Ambush? What's that?"

• Stupidest bad game habit: "Another bunch of orcs? DIIIIIE FOUL SCUM!"
