MayLith: The following is entirely IMHO.
I doubt (?) we'll ever have actual guidelines for RecentChanges comments, but FWIW, here are a few of my thoughts on them.
Things I've seen in RecentChanges comments that I do not like:
- Improper language (I think I've seen that... once?)
In the case of adding a new page to something like GeneralDiscussion: making the same or similar comment when adding the link AND creating the new page. (I'd prefer to see it only on creation of the new page, and only then if description is needed beyond the name of the newly created page.)
- Long comments about a minor edit or trivial change
Things I've seen in RecentChanges comments that I do like:
- Including game version with a brief bug report description
- No comment or a very brief comment, for minor edits
- Personable/funny comments
- When desired/needed, a detailed comment that gets the jist across
- Marking it as such if your new post embedded in the middle of a thread, rather than at the bottom. (Makes it easier to find.)
To borrow from RavenRed: $0.02 and counting.... Thoughts?
NeilStevens: I'm not bothered by the latter two things that bother you. If the first becomes an problem, we'll just get a way to edit those comments.
MayLith: Since we're trying to be more specific about how we feel, I'll say that those latter two things just irk me. I can certainly live with them.
