ToME WikiMayLith: The current HelpForBeginners page contains very useful, basic information about what a wiki is. I propose to add the following:
links to Wiki Policy and the Style Guide
- a section which
- encourages all users to create a homepage
- explains how to do so
- encourages users to state their forum nickname, if applicable
I say this because:
- IMHO links to policy and style logically belong on the beginner page
- I had trouble making a homepage, here, myself. (IIRC, actually, MM did it for me.)
- It would be convenient to users of both the forum and the wiki to know who's who
- I would like to speak to some users here, but since a) they haven't yet made homepages and b) I have no idea who they are on the forum, I can't... or at the very least, my ability to get their attention will be hit or miss, and the discussion in question would be very out of topic on a given wiki page.
Also, I recommend moving the link to HelpForBeginners higher on the Front Page, so that it is easily visible when the FrontPage first comes up.
NeilStevens: Just go ahead and do all but the forum part, I say. I oppose that part because I don't want people who didn't use that monster to feel less welcome.
MayLith: Will do, when I get back from work -- I'm on lunch right now. Re: the forum part, in what way would it make people who didn't use the forum feel less welcome? Just curious.
NeilStevens: It's the same way I've been watching for ever since I installed this software: I don't want this wiki to give even the appearance that it's an extension of the forum. I don't want it to feel like a playground for a clique of experienced forum users and developers. Even if we know that's not the case, new users could be given that impression easily with such emphasis on previous forum use.
In short, I don't want to give anyone any reason not to join in this wiki.
MayLith: Hmmm, I don't totally agree, but I can understand your POV. I can see (vaguely) how some people feel might be made to feel that way, even if it seems silly to me personally. Anyway, will do.
