Introduction
Challenge game. Two big disadvantages - it's a yeek. it uses no artifacts (not even randarts). Swordmaster class, usually regarded as powerful, loses much of its punch without the array of great artifact swords. To prevent the Risen from being a hopeless character, it worships Melkor. Therefore may Curse its opponents in melee. So I don't have to worry about killing things. Staying alive may be a bit more tricky
Took 98 random quests. We'll see whether it's another ironman factor or not. Though I certainly appreciate getting more skill points and better modifiers for things like Stealth or Spirituality. I also want to have enough Conveyance to Disarm traps and doors - it's a pain now. I wanted to mathom every artifact I could, but a) it's too much bother to take them to Bree, especially that b) they're valuable and I need cash to keep my chances of survival at high level - because with ego equipment there's not a 'definite' set and I always may need gold to buy something outstanding from dungeon markets (as I don't want to abuse stealing). Finally, I smell problems with the One. I must destroy it (no-artifacts) - so Melkor will abandon me - but I can take up worshipping him again from an dungeon altar - but this will reset my piety to 0, right? Not very good. Fortunately it only takes some killing to fix it.
Final Comments
Being a yeek was a pain for Vhee. Ego-items acquirable without extensive scumming or luck couldn't provide everything it needed. On the other hand, Curse more than made up for any weaknesses.
98 quests seemed to be an advantage early on, then as an ironman factor in Angband, but after all they neither easened nor hardened the challenge. There was a balance between more power and more dangerous situations from quests. On top of that, they have prepared me for tactical challenges of Morgoth, Sauron and Mt. Doom.
Half an hour in Moria fixed the 'ouch we have 0 piety after destroying the One Ring' problem. Though it took so little time because I wasn't collecting any items there.
Equipment comments
I think equipment deserves its own space, because it is a major part of the challenge. Here we go:
Weapon: Blessed broadsword of *slay animal*. The least impressive weapon to kill Morgoth in ToME ever? Probably. It has nice stat bonuses.
Shooter: Boomerang of *Slay Undead* covers resistance to nether and gives a bonus to wisdom. Could be better.
Rings: My two rings confer healthy +30 to speed, which lets me outrun almost everything. Which is good, considering my strategy is to strike first with Curse and use incredible speed advantage then.
Amulet: Trickery one is quite good. Speed + resist nexus + stealth + dexterity.
Light: Eol's quest completed. I won't worry about light sources anymore with this character, because the lantern I got is one of the best possible.
Armor: Elven armors of all kinds are considered here. I go by the high resists they confer. Disenchantment is a must, so it is here. I've seen a Mithril Armor of Immunity - fire, unfortunately. PDSM would be better, but it's so rare.
Cloak: Aman cloak with chaos resitance is good enough. No ego Elven Cloaks nor Shadow Cloaks seen.
Shield: Reflection wins over Dragon Shield of Preservation because various bolts would be dangerous if they didn't bounce off this.
Head: Crown of Telepathy - a no-brainer for an artifactless warrior, though I considered wearing Crown of Night And Day to cover dark resistance before getting into a darkness storm from Sauron and Morgy. Didn't happen anyway.
Gauntlets: Free Action is vital, so I use Free Action gauntlets.
Boots: Boots of Speed +10 - what to want more? Ok, boots of Elvenkind +10 - but it would be like winning a lottery. Not likely.
Digger: Magical Foo of Digging is in my opinion the best possible ego digger.
Chatter
ElIott - Good luck. My kobold priest of Manwe artifact-less character just died, and his kit was remarkably similar to yours. *Defender* weapon instead of Defender, crown of lordliness instead of telepathy, and boots of stealth rather than speed, but otherwise nearly the exact same stuff. I went with 0 random quests rather than 98, so you've got a MUCH tougher road than I had. Keep up the good work.
ZasVid - Sorry to hear about your char. I'm not entirely convinced that 98 quests are a 'game-toughener'. I get more skillpoints and once Curse gets to full power quests will be a piece of cake. Well, maybe not a cake, given the general yeekiness of this character, but not rock hard either. I hope
Anyway I'm a bit surprised that ego equipment is enough to cover all the bases. Of course, I've got only one source of most resistances and other abilities, but they don't stack anyway.
ZasVid - I've done all city quests but Last Alliance. Maeglin was tough, but 'summon friendly high undead and demons when low on hitpoints' Melkor feature saved my skin. And among the loot (lot of loot) was none other than Small Sword 'Sting' for the first time ever :/ On top of that, my Defender rapier got annihilated by Nazgul. So my equipment set got weaker than it was last time. Not good. On the other hand I encounter more and more very good ego items, which leaves me hoping that in the future I'll find something not only very good but also useful. Anyway, this character is getting really hardcore now.
ZasVid - I'm having some equipment problems all the time. Maybe I'm missing something. Any advice?
ZasVid - first touches of Angband. Repelling I might add. RNG throws everything it's got to stop me. Considering my "strike first with Curse" basic approach to any enemy, what are the worst possible quests? Princess guarded by non-moving spellcasters. And what do I get in first 5 levels of Angband? Princess quests for 10 Greater Draconic Qs (worst possible, because the shape of the room forces me to get into LoS of nearly all of them), then, after a hour long battle to finish this quest, I get another for none other than GREATER DRACONIC Qs. Fortunately only 5. Quick break for some plasma hound hunting to get Magic skill bonus. Then, 5 Eye Druj quest on Crypt level (I quickly fled from the special level - no need to fight with odds stacked against you, when you have virtually have nothing to gain in comparison to normal fights). Next level follows with 5 hand druj. Aaagh.
Note on 10 GDQ quest: I bought many scrolls of summon never-moving pet and read them in immediate vicinity of quest room, as well as some other places on the level. When I got enough druj and Qs, I've broke into the room and phase doored out. Quest Qs sometimes teleported away from the quest room and I was tracking them and taking down one by one, while my pets kept their summons occupied. Battle was long and dangerous, as Vheezarad is fragile and the battlefield had many open spaces due to burrowing undead. In the end, I've got all Qs, dismissed my pets and then picked what was left one monster after another easily. I spent about 45 minutes sorting the loot.
Now back to my non-moving enemies. Hopefully I get something mobile next time. Even GWoPs would be nicer.
ZasVid: I was close with that call. Not exactly GWoPs, but 14 Sky Drakes are almost in the same league. It took some tactical maneuvering to get them. Following levels were uneventful (in comparison to the first few). Though I've got a princess quest for beholder hive-mothers. Twice. Fortunately they're too slow to be a threat. I always get my first two or three Curses and then it's just a matter of repeatedly pounding them with my pathetic (damage-wise) sword. On top of that, I skipped two levels, where I've got two consecutive lost sword quests, one for Sky Drakes and another for Nightwings. I would go a bit further, but today is a bad day for playing ToME (at least in my case) - I've even ended up wearing an armor of Vulnerability during one of the quests.
ZasVid: More of the same later in Angband. I've skipped some hard FF quests. I was looking for some good equipment on Mt. Doom, but didn't find too much. Top level was hard, but when I've discovered that phase door works there picking monsters one by one became a lot easier. After clearing it, I went after One Ring, beat Sauron twice to get it. After destroying it I restarted worshipping Melkor in the Downs and went to Moria to regain piety. It took half an hour of killing trolls and assorted monsters to get to a healthy 18k piety. Final two figths were quite easy. Sauron fell to repeated Curse easily, Morgy required a few genocides to clear his summoned entourage, but couldn't do much at -30 speed.
I think Vheezarad could take out Melkor, but I don't feel like scumming for a cloak of air. Perhaps I'll do it if I get really bored in the near future, but don't hold your breath. This was a lot of fun to play. Now I'm pondering no-egos no-artifacts character. That would be hardcore!
On the other hand, doing an artifactless character second time would be cool too, though I'd go with ironman rooms to get more interesting egos, and no Curse. It's too powerful. Anyway, all of this is going to wait, because I'm taking a break from ToME to do other things and also I'd like to try out other variants or modules.
